I could really use a REIMBURSEDMENT OF LOST XP FROM DEATH ...

I deserve to be LVL 90 already!!!!

GIVE ME MY PARTICIPATION AWARD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!23!111

And I'm new, my LVL 85 is my 1st PoE toon made 10~ days ago on 2015-07-30 ...

Part of the challenges of the game are:

- learning how to build your characters to avoid dying
- learning how to beat bosses and deal with certain monsters to avoid dying
- learning the games mechanics in general to avoid dying

if there is no penality for dying, you don't have to avoid death it won't be a problem at all.

and if the is no problems about dying... well all the challenge above are obsoletes

While, conventionally, you'd think "DEATHS TEACH YOU A LESSON DAMMIT!!@!"

Eventually, if a player is concerned about "being accepted" or "competing", yeah, "survival instinct" & the "dopamine-oxytocin-endorphin addiction of UNABASHED CONQUERING" may trigger some compulsive aversion to VIRTUAL DEATH ...

( But, even many excellent competitors & players of acute, shrewd cunning & NATURAL AFFINITY and keeeeen acumen ... THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT DYING.

Speaking with a LVL 90 Duelist with an alleged 140K DPS in group, he had 470+ deaths, more than me! )

What punishing deaths does, IMO, is discourage GENUINE participation.

I personally have no trouble getting groups with DPS that performs & whisks through maps as MORE THAN a breeze.

Parasitic, leeching noob frenzy!!2!! eh ... ?? O_o

Kind of just want to advance my chosen character & set-up to the degree possible, while the time is available.

But BECAUSE I DIE SO MUCH, I literally often stand behind a wall 10-20 meters away unless I've tested some trash or other cruddy yellow baby-boss mobs.

I WILL NOT even try LVL 73+ map bosses anymore BECAUSE I LITERALLY ALWAYS DIE to them ...

IMO, I don't think punishing deaths is needed regarding XP loss.

There's Hardcore for that.

BUT, I do understand the supposed premise of "RISK vs REWARD", "RARE vs COMMON", "TRIUMPH over ADVERSITY", "ZERO SUM GAME winners vs losers" _prestige_ separating the capable from the incapable, the blessed from the cursed.

The learning curve is there, & deaths & consequence to death, with real disadvantages to losing, "allegedly incentivize" growth & development.

But increase & decrease will happen regardless.

Each has their NATURAL LIMIT that will be realized anyways.

Just make it another way to get back ur exp when u come back.

For example.

U die u lost 10% exp. but this exp is not totally lost, it is send into a pool. The next time u kill a monster, u get 100% the monster exp + 50% extra of that is extracted from the pool.

U die, u lost 10% exp = 100,000 is send into a pool
u kill a Monster exp is worth 1000 exp.
U will gain 1000 monster exp + 500 from pool.
Ur pool exp size now is 95,500.

This exp regain operation will keep on going until ur pool is emptied

what is the benefit of this? A single or two death is not so hurt, people would actually try harder content now.
Who wont benefit this? Those guys who think they can chain death their way to beat a boss.

That's actually a really good premise.

There could be extensive signature quests to recover EXPERIENCE / XP held up in the nether realm ...

I get it, XP loss on death. To an extent, I agree...why not..and you should be "punished" for dying. But damn. 3 maps worth of xp taken away in one death. Nah...
Here it comes..though..."Oh you haven't been playing since Beta like me and blah blah I support.STFU.
I am guessing, this is as far as GGG wants to go with this game. Because it wont go much further with that. I understand dying, I understand working with the boss to figure out his deal. But, when there are mechanics in the game that 1 shot you from off screen, or are tagging you off screen,. So many variable in each of these maps that make it very..frustrating the way it is.
But back to the subject..XP loss on death..stupid concept without a way to recoup that loss.
No I didn't have to walk 5 miles in 10 feet of snow barefoot without anything to eat to get here, but I have played plenty of games in my time. And "my time" is probably twice the amount than most of these "experienced" players. I've seen games come and go...this one wants to sit in back of the room..keep this stuff up.

I like some of the solutions posted..some make sense. Some are probably too hard for GGG to work with. It can be as simple as higher the reward for completing a map without a death vs it goes lower and lower when you do die..no cool toys.
