Feedback Request: Tempest League
I'm only 15 in the tempest league so feel free to ignore my post, but there is one thing I want to say about tempests:
The way they activate - or don't - is very annoying. Sometimes it feels like they trigger instantly when I walk into them, other times I have to stand still inside of them for like two full seconds to make them trigger. And so far on these low levels they just feel.. eh, they have like no impact. That of course might change at later levels, I just wanted to comment on how quirky and weird their triggering is. |

" It depends. So far there's a slight "Beyond syndrome" going on where trying to deliberately take advantage of a tempest slows progression down to the point where you stop bothering with it completely and end up treating it as a random buff (or a relative debuff in case a benevolent tempest went off on an enemy). So far the most impactful ones are definitely the ones that do damage or give a passive damage bonus to all enemies, as they can potentially turn a braindead-easy area into anything ranging from annoying (at one point I got chain-frozen for ~10 seconds trying to enter the next area) to outright deadly. One thing that I would like to underline is that... DEGEN FIELDS SHOULD NOT SPAWN UNDER AREA ENTRIES/EXITS ...under any circumstances. This is super important! This is different from maps where the only entry point is the initial town portal (which you can then reopen on neutral ground), and you know the map mod beforehand and you go there with a lot of HP and capped resistances. " I think I have only encountered Transmogrifying and Refining ones so far. Transmogrifying definitely sounded better on paper than it turned out in reality. See, I played Diablo II the other week, and was reminded just how much of a fucking drag it was to pick up all that gold. CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK-CLICK, that's so slow and horrible—and this tempest has reminded me of what was probably the lowest point of D2's quality of life. But the problem is you either take everything or don't take anything—there's no middle ground that makes sense. Refining is a lot better (quality gem farming may have to be looked at, though)—but it outright requires a well-tuned item filter to take full advantage of (flasks, 20% items, >12% rares for Chaos/Regal recipes). " They seemed workable (to a degree—I'm used to early HC leagues' stupid deadly bullshit though) everywhere up to late A4 Cruel; I haven't had time for further progression. In Normal it doesn't even feel like there's anything unusual going on; the effects are completely negligible. " I play Tempest because a HC league is inherently more interesting to me; I consider Warbands to be more mechanically engaging(but my opinion might change when I get a proper feel for it in endgame). That being said, Tempest isn't bad at all, I'd take it over Onslaught, Beyond, or Invasion any day. And it's probably the only time when a HC temp league is inherently more rewarding than its concurrent SC counterpart (if only for the inherent item quantity bonus). So, good job so far. There is definitely room for improvement though; the particular aspects that call for attention are: * spawning distance (should I have to chase them around so much if I want to take advantage of them?), * effect duration (5 seconds is nothing without Temp Chains, and there are only so many ways to curse oneself with Temp Chains and not die of brain cancer), * variety (we have like 9 variations on elemental themes using well-known skills and buffs but only a couple truly unique effects unavailable elsewhere in the game). Counter-question: how far have you gotten in it on live/alpha/beta. <Tyrfalger> Exactly, the next act is going outside Sarn and into those wheat fields (see the map) to become a farmer. Then we can spend our days endlessly farming. Wait a minute... Last edited by moozooh#4289 on Jul 15, 2015, 11:30:39 AM

Are the Tempests impactful?
Impactful? Yeah, but not in a good way. Are they scary? 99% they are not, but 100% of the time they are annoying! Do the ones that affect items feel rewarding? Didn't noticed any tempest mod that felt rewarding while I was playing. Are they better at higher or lower levels? They become a bit harder at higher levels but they stay annoying... Do people share information about what Tempests are running right now? Yeah... like "zone xyz has tempest, let's skip/wait 1hour/play something else" - doesn't really matter which mod spawns... Did you play Tempest because you thought it was more interesting than Warbands? I play/played Tempest because I always play hardcore. I did last SC league because of the challenges but decided to never do it again, it felt very boring to play SC in general. Did you play Warbands when you normally would have played Tempest? No.... but I stop playing Tempest too. Warbands is boring, Tempest is annoying and sadly perma hc is dead. Maybe there are some changes in the near future and I try PoE again, but for now... after over 2600 hours (steam count) it's time to say: I need a break! Have a problem with something I said? PM goetzjam don't derail a thread.

Short feedback: I just had a "Transmogrifying Tempest of Desperation".
"Transmogrifying" is super annoying. Really. I don't see how you'd ever want to kill monsters as long as either you or them are under this Tempest's effect. "of Desperation". How am I supposed to know what this is doing? No clue. |

Hi chris wilson. Level 80 Armour based scion incinerator here. /played 2days 5hours.
"No, most of the time i play like they are not there. "Not on the level i play. Some of them are supposed to create dangerous situations (cannot be damaged) but in practice you wait for the buff to fall off trashmobs so you can kill them. Same story as Necrovigil or P-link, slows you down. Not dangerous but unpleasent. They are also scary in a sense that there can be too much on the screen to know what is going on. "Havent noticed anything special in this regard. "My experience was that they are helpful at low levels (Hasteaura!) When youre lacking gear. But are unnecessary in higher levels. "Yes. I cant tell how much that happens, but ive seen one guy in chat telling others about a dangerous Tempest. "No, not at all! I play Tempest because i prefer the HC enviroment. "I did not. I might give it a try, because i dont like in what direction HC is going. I like a challenge, but i dont like how plastic these Tempests feel. Just like Bloodlines they are put-on. And it breaks the little bit of Immersion poe has for me. |

My biggest beef with Tempest league is the fact that it managed to make the game even less summoner friendly. I always roll summoner if I do not have another build that I really want to run, and I did the same thing now. Ever since the change to Smoke Mine and subsequent introduction of Convocation summoner has been getting harder and harder to play due to new additions to the game. Tempest league is by far the worst of the lot.
If we disregard the complete inability to deal with most of the new content introduced in act 4 (Daresso, Piety, Malachai) the tempests introduce plenty of new ways to just suck the fun out of playing a summoner. I've had maps with elemental hazards that strike down every few seconds changing the game from "kill monsters to find items and level up in order to get stronger and feel some kind of sense of accomplishment" to a game of "running around like an idiot not damaging any monsters because you have to keep your specters away from the circles of impending ghost-doom striking down everywhere". The tempests have managed to introduce a slow down of the core gameplay without even affecting the monsters in many cases due to the fact that I have to do nothing but run around for most of the time thanks to the 8 second cooldown of Convocation. If you're so keen on introducing these new massive AoE minion slayer mechanics, maybe it could be an idea to either lower Convocation cooldown or make it run on a charge system like traps or Flame Dash. It has also been mentioned before that tempests in progress boss areas just should not be a thing, I literally had to say "afk in an hour to see if I get a playable tempest next one" several times. Unfortunately I find myself avoiding areas with certain tempests occasionally but I never find myself aiming for areas with certain tempests unless I want a full clear for the challenge. |

" Are they impactful? Yes, they basically decide how you'll map in map X or in map Y, this includes completely skipping the map regardless of how good you rolled it. Are they scary? Yes, but the wrong kind of scary. What were you guys thinking when making things like Veiling or Abyssal? A tempest that basically means 4x damage in most cases, depending if you or the monster grab it? Some are absolutely annoying, like the random spell ones, constant storm calling, or physical degen tornado, they clutter the screen and mess with the good sound that the game had. There are also the chilled and shocked ground ones, and to a lesser degree burning and desecrated, they lag your game and annoy. Do people share information about what Tempests are running right now? Barely. Did you play Tempest because you thought it was more interesting than Warbands? No, I can't feel excitement in a softcore league. The whole league is a failure, and I don't wish any of it's content making it to live. It is annoying to wait 3 seconds to get a positive tempest buff, it is also annoying to see a tempest appear and trigger almost instantly, it is even worse when a rhoa charges, passes through a short duration damage tempest, steals it and one-shots you. Then other tempest sound good but they add no difficulty at all, I'm looking at you +exp tempest. X map gets Abyssal/Veiling, 95% of builds skip, as in, don't open, the map for the entire hour except the poor brave idiot that attempted the map when the tempest switched, who's gonna be that idiot? You roll a really good Y map, two damage mods but still manageable; bambam, shocked ground tempest. Map with Temporal Chains, gets chilled ground, haha have fun clearing! You play flameblast, and your map gets the "elemental damage heals", haha have fun clearing! You play whatever ranged build and get evangelist bubbles, haha have fun clearing! You play whatever build and get divine tempest, haha have fun clearing! Back in Invasion/Beyond/Bloodlines, you could play around the difficult content. For invasion it meant having good movement skills and reflexes for that sweet log out, and a solid build of course. In beyond (after double regen, triple resist was gone) is was an xp fest that added potentially dangerous enemies, beyond bosses were extremely easy to skip and if you ever died to one it's because you attempted to kill it without having a good build for them. Bloodlines introduced new mods for magic mobs that you could read and play around with, bearers? try to kill them all at the same time, voidspawn/living blood? don't kill the last mob if you are not ready for it, corrupting blood? use a staunching at the right time. I understand these leagues had many issues, but not nearly as glaring as the ones in tempest, where everything completely fucking sucks. Bottom line: non-salvageable. " Quoting my post to update feedback, since I recently made it to Cruel and advanced to A4. Had bunch of new experiences with Tempests, including dual affix areas. In general, I really like the idea. Giving an area small IIQ boost while creating some variety in the encounter with mobs we're well used to is a very very solid way to improve gameplay. It's interesting plus improves loot noticeably, win-win. I have a feeling both Tempest and Warbands will make it into the perma leagues, they're both really good mechanics that add some nice flavor to progression. Hoping maps are nice too (just not too rippy pls o.o). For POE Devs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea6UuRTjkKs

I've been holding back on my feedback because I wanted to thoroughly try the league before making a judgment. I made it to level 85 and high level maps at this point.
First I want to say that I really like this league and have had a lot of fun in this one so far. However I think the Tempests would be even better if they were more impactful. It is hard to avoid bad ones and seek out good ones when they only stay for one hour. I think at least for map the duration should be doubled to 2 hours. Also the duration of the buff effects from the Tempests should be at least 50% longer. Right now the opportunity cost to pick them up doesn't make the buffs worth it for such a short duration. Sadly after a while most people I play with mostly ignore positive Tempests unless they spawn pretty much on top of them. Last edited by Kabushiki#0712 on Jul 17, 2015, 3:12:54 AM

Are the Tempests impactful?
- In a way that is extrem OP against players and gamedestroying so yes! I have no problem with games that is hard and i have to do more then spm left button but realy? 3-4 Tempest thing in tight areas like Caves? On of my clanmates did play summoer on Merc, all of his minions died at one shots by Tempest but could easy facetank Vaal smash, honest, that is a Epic fail.. Poisoncloud on the ground makes my HP @lvl60+ drop Quick, add some wirlwinds, some summoned skeletons and why not, some more Tempest things.. That is NOT fun at all, i understand why people leave HC this season.. Will you do anything to fix this? 99/100 areas have Tempest and that is not cool, when yo adressed this Tempest i thougt it would be a rare thing, not a spamming killing thing.. Are they scary? -No irritating, i understand what you are trying to do and i love it, but hey, scale it of!! Do the ones that affect items feel rewarding? Yes ofc, sometimes the Cold Tempest is a lifesaver in tight fights with lots of mobes, saved me @60+ so yeah! fun with haste also! Are they better at higher or lower levels? It has it´s charm in both ways i want to say! Do people share information about what Tempests are running right now? Yepp, and they rage quits on Merc becaus they can´t enter a area because of the Tempests, so yes.. Did you play Tempest because you thought it was more interesting than Warbands? I only play HC |
