And so it begins! (the slippery slope)
" Very good point, thank you, though i must also add, does the high MTX prices not also be a direct result of the quality of the game? |

If does it is in the same way as luxury products. Sure the quality can be better than a similar product but 90% of the buy is for the ego. To show off. Like buying Armani jeans instead of Levi. They are higher quality but not 5 times the price higher, not to mention they are still just jeans. At the end of the day you just want to wear the brand name.

" While I admire the dedication of following a game you don't actually play, don't you think that NOT playing means you lack the context to form a useful / informed opinion? " I hold no hate for the 1% folks. They have little impact on my enjoyment of the game. Power creep CAN be bad. However, when it comes to power increasing in step with increased top end difficulty, it isn't nearly as damaging to the future of a game. " Why? Because it is entirely separate from the non Garena game, I don't see how it harms much of anything. Though the Singapore gateway thing I don't really like. I will agree with that. " Or possibly to avoid confusion? Either way, I'm not a fan of that particular move. " I'd hardly call passive resets pay to win in a strict sense. They have very little actual impact. I don't like their existence, but that aren't actually providing any real success advantage. " This is more about challenge and balance. I don't see it as any real sign of a trend in any specific direction. " What happened to Blizzard North, and the content since then has very little in common with what you've said up until this point, so I'm not actually sure what you are talking about here... " If you've been monitoring things as closely as you claim, you may have noticed people have complained about everything every step of the way. Some complaints have resulted in changes in response. Others less so. People will always complain, but I wouldn't really say they've chased away their target audience. It's a constantly evolving game, and people are bound to be upset with changes. I'm betting GGG monitors stuff like this carefully and if it looks like some change is almost universally disliked, GGG reanalyzes the situation ( look at the whole UI update debacle ). " Why don't you play the game if you are so interested? Is it that you are only interested in the business model, and not the game it is based around? "I would have listened... I would have understood!" - Scion
Have you removed Asus ROG/GameFirst yet? |

" Ok, I think I get it now. You are predicting the future based on ____ evidence. Also, you are suggesting that PoE is doing well financially. So what was all that other rambling about? We fight to delay the end because it's the means that matter.

How is GGG alienating their player base? Because some people don't like some changes made to the game? It's been like this for 3 years now.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

" That completed the post for me. What possible reason would you have for 'studying' GGG and their 'tactics'? I love this game and yes I have 'invested' in it but a few hundred dollars over three years is no big dent in my wallet. I don't give a flying **** about mirror worthy gear or their owners, when I get home from my 50+ hour a week job and deal with my kids and my super duper spouse I play PoE. Why? Because I enjoy it. If it ever comes down to having to pay-to-play I wont. ~ Please separate the PoE1 and PoE2 forums. Last edited by DoubleU#7266 on Jun 10, 2015, 7:48:19 PM

First off, learn how to properly spell what it is you're aspiring to be.
2nd, as an aspiring economist, you should know better that time is a finite resource and there is opportunity cost even in playing free to play game. So your argument that f2p doesn't need marketing tool is invalid. And for someone who claim to be a big ARPG fan with entrepreneurial ambitions and not deep dive into understanding the success mechanisms of what is arguably the genre defining game suggest to me you lack tactical foresight in realizing your ambitions. Good luck making something half as successful as POE. It will convert your forum titles into decorative square badges that use the space next to your forum posts more economically so that you can show off an unlimited number of them at any one time. - GGG, 2018 (https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3573673)

Hi MaxTheLimit & FadeXF,
Thank you for your very reasonable replies. Yes, I am interested in both the game AND the business model, but due to real-life commitments, I cannot play the game for long. I once had a level 30 duelist, if that counts, before i forced myself to delete it to focus on my commitments. Crowdfunding is not unique to GGG. More and more entrepreneur projects are funded significantly if not entirely by crowdfunding these days, especially with advancement of the internet. The people who will fund these projects, are the people who "buy into" the set of ideals that the organization stands for (or they THINK the organisation stands for), and back in 2012 when i first heard about PoE, the ideals that GGG stood for are roughly but not limited to: - free-to-play, available to all - never pay-to-win - crowdfunded and thus answers to the community - power permanence (no power creep) - ARPG catered to hardcore gamers (doesn't care about casual gamers) of course no one ever made an official list, but these were the reasons people supported GGG. These were the ideals people paid to support. If, for example, back in 2012/2013 GGG were to announce that there would be higher mods than Tyrannical and Glyphic in the future, Im sure many of the supporters back then under the "no power creep" category would have thought twice before spending real $$$. " And as DoubleU says clearly, if the game ever becomes pay-to-play he wont play it. That is the last straw. I think its not unfair to then label him, for example, under those who supported GGG because of their f2p ideal. Whats happening now, is a significant pissing-off of the "no power creep" audience. Over at garena, both them and GGG are IMO testing the limits of "available to all" & "no pay-to-win". Of course, real $$$ for full respecs is hardly "point of no return", but saying it puts them on a "slippery slope" is no over-exaggeration too. It begs the question, whats next? And lastly, yes, if i actually played the game, of course i would be better equipped to make an opinion. But i can't play. Can't fault me for studying though! Which is why I started this thread, mainly to see how the actual supporters of the game react to the idea of a company they love conforming to realism. My own opinion is that all ideals any crowdfunded organization have ultimately erodes away, so I am keen to see what happens next :) Last edited by whitified#2025 on Jun 11, 2015, 2:48:59 AM

" Don't worry you're probably the first to admit it and if people could read past instead of invalidating your viewpoint as a spectator this would be a more fruitful discussion. But instead you'll get some people that have and still currently putting a lot into this game and the forum dwellers do norhing but talk out of their arse, with little actual grasp of the game. " On your 1st & last points: LOL NO COMMENT On your 2nd point: Yes good point, thank you, of course time is a resource thus an opportunity cost, it always is. Though I must also add that time as an opportunity cost in a f2p, hardcore gaming context, pales in comparison to the opportunity cost in a pay-to-play, casual or semi-casual context. (In other words, lets not pretend that those who play PoE aren't also the ones with relatively more time to game, therefore time as an opportunity cost to them is also less impactful.) Regarding opportunity cost, i should also add that introducing "power creep" into the game also has an opportunity cost for GGG, namely the pissing off those who doesn't want to see it. More importantly, many feel, as do I, that this goes against the ideals that GGG stood for, therefore me hypothesizing that GGG is "going down a slippery slop". Is this change worth the opportunity cost? I really dont know. But we shall see :) On your 3rd point: Dare i say i DO see the appeal of PoE? I liked D2, hated D3, so naturally I am going to be attracted by a game like PoE. There are many, many reasons PoE is successful, but they are irrelevant when talking about whether or not an organization is on a slippery slope of any kind. What is interesting is the existence of loyal supporters, "fanboys" as some people call them. (Im not calling you one btw!) I noticed, from browsing the forums at least, that people are not as against the "power creep" change as i thought. To the extent that if you are against the change, you are automatically labelled "owner of mirror-worthy gear", and with it other negative connotations. I believe if this change was announced, say back in 2012-2013, the negative reaction would have been far greater. This strikes me as yet another genius from GGG, one i have yet to come up with a good explanation for. Only rational way to look at it is, that gamers are becoming so addicted to content, they will put up with more and more sh!t. If this explantion is indeed true... then its not looking good for you Exiles :) |
