Thanks to the graphical update in Act 4, my Diablo 3 friends are switching over to POE

Yeah! Another D3 vs. POE thread. That's what i call contribution...

The Sirus fight is a disgrace.
Never liked D3 cuz it was cartoonish,PoE is simple and gritty.
Not sure if OP is trolling or just blind, the graphics have not been overhauled,as far as i've heard performance-wise there really have been no improvements.
Shadows still are either totally off,or shaded so much that larger crowds can eat your fps alive no matter what.
That being said - the only thing that has changed, from what i can see is new environment lightning, which is to be expected in a brand new environments, and some more mixing with different themed in-game objects.
All in all, graphically nothing has changed, apart from the outlays.
No rest for the wicked.
GGG is asking a 30$ fee to get into the beta?
EXCELLENT! They both need and deserve some more money
from the public.

glad the OP is reporting how pleased he is with the graphical
enhancements, and the state of act 4. Looking forward to playing
a bit when the beta is over.

I was drawn to poe for the d2 style gameplay and even the graphics,
which were a bit nostalgic. Looking forward more to gameplay than graphics.

I would never NOT play a game because of slightly dated graphics.. The core game is what is important imo

Well, but if the game ran at 10 FPS, you probably wouldn't. :P
That was the main offender to me, and now it is (partially?) gone, which is great.
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance.
Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.
Honestly, I was completely offset by Diablo 3's graphics long before they released the game.

Path of Exile was much more honest in terms of the interface and always gave a gritty sort of realism over a... "Cartoonish WoW effect?"

I mean, D3 was just a bunch of what we'd always seen Blizzard do before, but remodeled to meet a more macabre sensibility. Although, the two never really "clicked" for me. The overly enunciated features of the characters and environment always felt like a play on words more than an honest attempt.

In my mind, graphically, PoE was always superior to D3. If only for that artistically driven sensibility and effect by determining environment.

EDIT: I mean, if you really take the time and look at the environmental aspects of PoE? It's a really gorgeous game. The artists involved should be insanely proud of what they've done. D3 is just... A cartoon to me. PoE is playable art.

They didn't ask for anything to get into the beta and are still giving away free keys.

The supporter pack is an overwhelming community request that they obliged to. Which is pretty amazing for a nook and cranny game development company.

Yeah. Just a cartoon. Not art. Because if something is not serious, it is no art ;) That's why i love those kind of threads.
And about the things Blizzard just "did before": You could also call that a CI, maybe you've heard of that before. That made Blizzard sell what? A billion games? That got Blizzard what? Hundreds of awards? Taste is different. I get that. But judgement is a thing that should be treated more carefully than you do. Short: Everything was fine. Until you ruined it with the last sentence / your edit.

The Sirus fight is a disgrace.
The thing that made me cringe a bit at D3 graphics is that it looks nothing like Diablo 1 or 2. It looks like fucking WoW and it just doesn't fit the Diablo vibe. D3 is overall a terrible, terrible sequel to D2 and the graphics just underline that.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Wholeheartedly agree with bolded statement.

RE: the sells a billion games sentiment, was that because of the actual game's merits, or because of who made it, and how deeply anticipated it was?

If we lived in an alternate universe where Blizzard just decided to let the franchise die, and GGG made D3 instead (actual Diable 3, in it's current form), do you think it would be anything but universally panned? Do you think even more than a handful of people would give it a second, or even a first glance?

Fuck no. If anything, D3 looks like a crappy browser game. And had anyone but Blizzard made it, that's exactly what it would be.

Yup Blizzard is sacred to many, or atleast has been, they aren't the same anymore.

Still D3 came at a time when most people thought the game would be great. Even the proffesional reviwers gave it great reviews.
So no wonder D3 sold well, but Reaper of Souls didn't sell that great in comparison. Even though I think RoS did fix some issues.

Now in retospect i think most agree that vanilla Diablo was a flopp. Maybe not financially, but its a stain in Blizzards reputation and i bet many will hesitate to buy the next Diablo game.
It certainly wont be rememberd as a great ARPG the same way D2 was.
