malachais simula-low level lightning caster helmet, you get a lot of damage and free mana cost with the downside of using life.
covenant, mid level armor, same idea, caster unique-free mana cost until you can sustain your abilities.

I was leveling lighting tendrils templar recently, stopped to use mana flasks somewhere around A2N... with new templar/witch/shadow trees there is no problem with sustaining mana while leveling IMO. In addition, since 24 lvl you can use HoT-CoH-WM.

So, even if those two can still be used as intended, it's like crippling yourself for a purpose of just using those, there is next to point in doing so otherwise. And almost any other choice is better. But yes, maybe there should be such uniques...

I think the main idea of it you get a lot of damage and free mana cost, with a downside, the damage is quite a lot to be hoenst, 60% spell damage at level 17 is pretty nice, but these 2 are really just options to use, theyre not better or worse than anything, you can use them if you want to or you have to, maybe some people dont want to deal with mana or clarity as a spellcoster so they just slap a malahcais for damage or a covenant while leveling so they dont have any problems with their mana in case their gear sucks.

Anyway i dont think theyre horrible ghastly uniques, their use is limited yes, but i wanted to keep the list with just the main offenders, the worst cases

It was so, before those:

Were added to game. I recently used DW Lifespring/Reverberation to 53 lvl, up to Cruel Sceptre of Gods, and could use even further and can progress smoothly with no more sources of spell dmg on gear.

I don't deny, that Malachai or Convenant are not usable. But those are not useful anymore...

My experience can vary, but on low levels, I find it harder to get suitable life regen than mana regen anyway.

this is theory. have you seen anyone using it?

there are vendor-available +1 caster weapons, blood magic is global (so auras are no-no and heralds are very punitive) so let me remain skeptic about it's usefulness. in short - the day ggg removed snapshot this item lost its place in this game

oh, i hear 'static strike'? no. that 20% lightning is not worth loosing HoA+Hatred, not even close

most of listed uniques are the same way - people make up some theoretical use that makes zero sense in practice (in some case because theyve never tried item in question and just want to be the 'special snowflake, the original one')

Yes, yes i have. I did a run with him and it's extremely effective for the cost involved.

Clearly malachai still has a purpose.

Sorry to say, but this Dry Woods run is not so impressive, clear speed is rather average and this poor scion was quite few times almost on low life. And it's only 71 lvl area... So, as I wrote above, it is usable, but for me it was quite far from "extremely effective"..., so not so useful.

^that video was when he was still developing the build and acquiring some gear for it.

I think he did the gorge speed run with that one later on and got around 4 min+-. Would have to check that thread to be precise do.

Just to say, when you look at the vid he is using a 3-link discharge when he has a 5-link armor so really hes just demonstrating the raw budget power of the build, like he usually does.

Obviously it's not top-end, but that helmet did make this build possible.

But what possible? You saved 1 socket for BM gem, while you could put (eg.) both Heralds, PoL and PoF on mana, to have more DPS and be more tanky?

Yes, this build works. Yes, it is usable. But not due to this mask, but even with this mask. Probably without this mask could be better.

It provides a 7-link if you have a 6-link armor.

Any additional gem to a skill usually grants it 10% to 20% MORE damage output.

Further more it has synergy with the armor he is using (volls) while being a caster. Caster's have very little use for aura's, that is, in comparison with other builds, that additional gem will be better then an aura supplement of heralds.

And it provides up to 65% lightning damage if i am not mistaken, so it saves roughly 8 skill points in the passive tree, disregarding the travel cost to blood magic.

So,

1) you don't get more damage from heralds.
2) yes this mask is BiS for this particular combo and build set-up.

if you watch the video youll notice that he is using 3 links on discharge to prove how cheap the build is, its just Discharge-lifeleech-lightning pen... i think thats pretty impressive
Not many builds can clear that fast with such mega cheap gear and only 3 links

What about these?

Deidbell, nice stats armor and nice damage, the cannot not leech when on low life is a downside that almost never applies since at those low levels you mostly rely on flasks anyway.

ondars are pretty bad, even for those eb MoM mana when hit gain builds, but i guess that for their level the stats, high evasion and movespeed when in trouble do help,

shavronnes pace are acutally ok leveling boots, especially if youre doing a ES based char, theyre the highest movespeed boots in the game, which is very useful for leveling

I really considered adding sin trek, but the enemy cannot leech life is the mod that saved them, theyre pretty nice for pvp if youre fighting a char that leeches and you dont have the bloodless keystone, otherwise for their level its just a filler unqiue until you get some proper MS boots.

Ambus i talked about a few pages ago, i personally like it, for hardcore i used that in races too, those endurance charges really help the party a lot especially if youre far off from conduit
