Both my avatar and unique item went really well, I'm sure I'm not the only one who had a very positive experience with the whole process.

It's unfortunate that there have been quite a few that haven't gone well or smoothly, but that's definitely not the only side of the story here.

Experiences are always different because people are different. Maybe you got lucky. Its like getting ahead in line at the super market or ending up waiting forever for it to move.

I think if GGG had some plan on how do to this things might have went along a lot smoother. Like design uniques in short bursts or so, like 10 uniques in a certain time period till all are done.

Raking in the money was the easy part, making good on what they wanted to give in return is the hard part.

I ran out of time to read the full thread, got through about 6 pages but i'm surprised nobody suggested using IM instead of email. In every case I read about this, there seems to be a large delay in responding to emails. Given the workload of the unique developers (I've never seen a figure of exactly how many design-a-unique supporter packs have been purchased), Surely it would be far more efficient to handle these sequentially.

With these designers jumping around amongst dozens of concurrent uniques, it comes as no surprise that there are communication issues. With that in mind, having a real time conversation on the matter appears to have no down-side. Instead of waiting weeks for an email saying "Your idea doesn't work because of X", finding that out straight away will allow both parties to tweak the concept to achieve something that works.

Getting a unique designed in one or two sessions sounds much more feasible if you just use a better communication method. The only reasons to not be able to do that would be to check with other developers whether a certain concept is possible.

TL;DR; Ditch the email and use something that enables real time dialogue.

A lot of times, the developers I worked with didn't have the answers straight away. A few of the emails I received were things stating they'd have to check into it with the programmers to see if it was something that was feasible from a technical standpoint. I imagine they wouldn't want to be put on the spot through instant communication systems.

EDIT: Another downside to IMs is it can be more demanding than emails (As with emails there is the expectation of having to wait for a response...generally not several months, but the waiting expectation is still there to an extent). I have to use an IM system at work and now cringe whenever I receive instant messages because I get so many of them throughout the day from people asking questions or needing assistance with things when I already have so much on my own plate. I think I would go literally insane if I had to deal with 250+ people like myself sending me IMs while I went went about my day as a GGG dev. They do have other responsibilities, unfortunately.

because then the unique wouldn't be unique and the supporter might be sad that they weren't told a similar item was already in works.
I, too, have yet to design my unique, but have been VERY concerned with the overall quality of the uniques that have been coming out. I think Koreapsu said it best:

They don't all have to be a Mjolner, but they should all be decent. No one was lured into paying $1000 with the promise of "Design Your Own Vendor Trash", and it's just shit that the devs think these results are acceptable.

Other than that, the game is GREAT and poopoo to the naysayers.
I tried hard to stay out of this thread but here is my perspective and experience so far....

I have put forth 3 concepts so far in terms of a general flavor I would like my unique to capture. I haven't been very pushy or demanding because of the backlog of work but the response times for simple yes/no answers (no complicated theory crafting here) have been extremely delayed and demotivating towards pushing for progress.

All of the theme's I have been interested in capturing have pretty much resulted in no go situations from GGG's perspective. I want to put forth an idea that really inspires me so, I am not jumping from one idea to the next just to get my item finished.

I am still really excited to have the possibility to leave my mark on a game that is very high on my list of all time favorites however, I have a strong fear that like Boem mentioned, I will pour tons of effort into something and by the time the production cycle is complete and the item is introduced, my item or concept will be obsolete due to how fast and often the meta and game mechanics change vs. the time to actually get an item into the game.

I would prefer a much more collaborative back and forth environment with GGG along with a given frame of time to work on my idea. At this point I feel if I am not hounding them with emails I will just be left blowing in the wind. I refuse to hound so here I am.

... Did you even bother to read ? The OP is the supporter that made both... Your point doesn't stand.

The point is that a unique should ideally not be a replacement for a well rolled rare, but instead give some interesting options. Like you said, you can get ES on other gear, meaning that the ES on the crown isn't a dealbreaker. Meanwhile the crown can have chaos resist that is twice the amount you can get on a rare, that alone gives it niche uses.

But anyways, the important thing is that I am happy with it, and I am.

You know what could have made it unique? instead of "20% increased damage on lowlife" it could have said "Life Regen applies to Life AS WELL AS Energy shield on Low life".

There you go. Unique with drawbacks and a unique use. It has a better zealoths oath on lowlife and solves 1 problem of lowlive without shavs.

Off-topic : this would make it BiS for non shavs/lorica users and would require a severe downside attached to the item, a lot harsher then some negative mana regen.

Peace,

-Boem-

This. Please make this. Would become an amazing unique instead of an ''ok'' one :)
so this idea is even more stupid and worst than I first thought since GGG doesn't make money on this according to Chris... end result PO'd supporters feeling cheated and waste of time, money and HR on GGG's end... please scrap this lose-lose idea forever, for the sake of everyone.

If creating Unique items is too time consuming, why not offer the supporters alternatives to the Unique creation so you can satisfy more people?

Like a one of a kind Hideout Item, or allow each supporter to have a special NPC of their choosing in their Hideout. Or a special hideout zone, a Colored Name, or just Involve some of the supporters in the decisions of Act 4 (Zone names, NPC Names etc)

Honestly I would still like to create an Item for the game, who wouldn't want to use something they helped create. But I am certain others might like an alternative to waiting years to get an Item made.

Telling people for years that your "swamped" in regards to item creation in my mind is simply not an optimal solution, offer alternative solutions.

Mors makes great points, maybe GGG could care less about people who donate large values, now the long-tail of micro-transactions are accounting for a bulk of their income.
