is Static Strike strong? [build inside] [20k DPS milestone reached]

here's my Work In Progress Staff Templar, putting Static Strike to good use.
started Act 3 Merciless.
mapping since level 61. currently @64.

check it out:

current gear

gear before Abyssus switch

Astramentis and Pillar Of The Caged God, are the heart of the build.
they work together to make the most out of Static Strike's AoE and damage.
Abyssus completes the picture, with an absolutely massive DPS boost.

a 6-link setup, if you can get one, is adding the Physical To Lightning gem for even more damage, and - more importantly - full elemental, which isn't mitigated by monsters' armour.

Bandit Rewards:

Normal - Oak (life).
Cruel - Kraytin (attack speed).
Merciless - skill point.

Uh, pretty much any build with good blues can destroy things in act 2 cruel.

maybe, but after pretty much 1-shotting Brutus Cruel - I think this has a good potential to become a monster :)

I'll try to keep this updated, in case you guys would like to do something similar.

They have us a new melee skill that has the potential to be relevant in end game and now we are posting threads about it being broken, basically begging GGG to nerf it. Good job OP, this is why we can't have nice things...
SS is strong, but broken? Dunno. Your gear is really strong for A2C :)
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

you know they will.
it's a "flavour of this temporary league" melee skill, which will get nerfed when the league ends.
hopefully not too hard.
it's always been this way.

so enjoy the build, and who knows maybe it will still be fun after the Nerfbat hits.

You're using a 6 link skill off mana, with the only things influencing your mana ragen being a couple +int modifiers, Doedre's Damning's implicit mana, and 15% reduced mana regen from your LLD ring. I assume you're using multiple mana/hybrid pots or waiting on mana regen constantly, since even clarity (which you aren't running) or Elreon rings wouldn't be able to cope with that expenditure.

You're using 8 uniques and have specced almost entirely into damage. I don't doubt that you're destroying things in A2C. That's not much of an achievement though considering how much currency you have invested in your character. I'm running Static Strike in Bloodlines, and while pretty good- it's nothing amazing like you make it out to be.

If anything, it's the melee counter skills that are the broken thing this patch (automatic chill and stun whenever a titty-bitch hits me? yes please!). Static Strike is a good skill. It's well designed and well tuned; it's strong in the early game despite upgrades, but its clearspeed isn't anything ridiculous like Prolif burn or Rainbownuke.

John, please, do not judge skills on their low-end-content performance.. ggg tries to balance content around endgame (and A BIT around racing but only tiny bit). cruel is non-governed territory where weird stuff happens (that then fades into obscurity - lightning trap works in cruel!)

not that i deny that Static Strike is a problem. it is. but not because it is VERY over the top (it is but if tornado shot is still with us Static Strike is here to stay)

Static is a problem due to it making several other skills (cleave, sweep) pretty much redundant. also it scales EXTREMELY well with new templar ele nodes (and 1.2 (?) monster ele resists reduction - in some cases to 0). it is the power creep in its purest and ugliest form. it is no longer something NEW and powerful. it is a rehash of old but simply made better.

btw with 6link in cruel you can make ANY (and i mean that) skill work

what killed bruts was 'first hit applies shock, explosion does 50% more damage'. it is one of the hidden multipliers this skill has - it shines not only vs packs but vs tough single targets too.

and funny stuff - if they made initial hit ZERO damage - it would still be one of (or the) best melee skills out there..

cut for brevity

replace multistrike with WED and head for templar ele nodes. these scale Static Strike like CRAZY.. but then be aware of ele reflect. static strike reaches its max potential when you can 1shot white mob and run to another pack (carrying explosion with you) and killing on the run. multistrike roots player in place and cuts the clear speeds CONSIDERABLY

Thanks for the advice, but I'm using all my remaining passive points to move towards maxed block to utilize the broken as fuck counter-skills. I'll test out WED, but I do know the negative effects of Multistrike and am using it with that in mind. Despite rooting you, it also prevents completely whiffing your attack- which is huge with melee.
Why would I use Static Strike over flameblast?
