risk/reward isn't coming. ever. [I give up]

Because optimizing your build is primarily about often requires disregarding base defenses of items and only caring about socket colours.

Also, it is pretty clear that the game cannot predict precisely what gear everybody wants. It would be ludacris ludicrous to expect the game to achieve such a thing.

Aside from the bolded corrections above, you pretty much got the message. Class dismissed.

that's... that actually makes a lot more sense than the reason I stated in OP.
thank you, EpicFail42 :)

but... does that mean there can be no middle ground where both GGG/PoE survive and (S)SF players can feel their efforts and skill are worth something, even if they aren't engaging in all-around trade and MTX-showcasing?
I think there can.
I hope there can.

The middle ground is already there, self-found has been viable for a while now and I'd say it's actually easy in the current iteration of the game. It just takes longer.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

Just a reminder that this thread is John giving up and not posting any more about risk/reward

Might take 20 more pages though, oh god.. save us.

Dunno why you guys are so hostile to the OP.
He has a point. The fact that he mentions it really often does not make it less valid.
I'd like to see:
- much lower chance of good stuff dropping from barrels, etc...
- slightly better drop chance with rare and boss monsters
- much much lower chance to drop items with reqired level < area level -10.

All told, total drop rates could remain the same, just shifting the bias more towards hard monsters. That would be better risk vs reward and no one gets "everything for free".
May your maps be bountiful, exile
Just gonna share my opinion about this issue:

Risk/reward is to some extent shown in POE (atziri and uber atziri) since all the items dropped there are fairly useable across multitude of characters and builds.

I play mostly solo, trade for some items but generally don't flip items (generally because i did flip 2-3 items because they were just too good of a deal to pass up). And the game isn't that hard really, Forsaken Masters made most of drops of okay quality now.

However solo self found can't and won't ever compete to trading and i am fine with it.
The game is already easy if you know what you are doing and making better gear drop will make it even harder to find upgrades while trivializing more content.

In the end i have fun playing PoE so i am not bothered by these issues, you simply choose not to have fun by being bothered how others play the game and how their gameplay is different.
Because if you had no idea Shavs existed you wouldn't be bothered if someone had it, but you know therefore you find it inadequate that as a solo player you probably won't drop one soon.

I like to think that some items are just a cherry on the top, they trivialize the game even more and are not needed to have fun in the game.

I disagree with that. It's fun for me to break that stuff and getting rewarded regularly with juicy rewards feels great.
