Armor is bad, and it should feel bad.

I'm currently running 8500 armor buffed with 1800hp at level 63 as a duelist and its absolutely fine.

Yeah, there is some spike damage but nothing unmanageable.

Playing solo is a different story when the entire instance is hitting you at the same time, lol.

The ladder seems to indicate that melee are not at a disadvantage.

There is no true melee in the top 20 of the ladder.

Ground Slam doesn't count, EK doesn't count, Lightning Strike doesn't count.

All "melee"s in the top of the ladder are all just ranged skill spammers.

Melee is using melee skills: http://en.pathofexilewiki.com/wiki/Melee_Skills
I need more purple titles

Just because they are labelled melee doesn't mean they have to be used as such. Law does not dictate usage.

should consider block as mitigation too
with tempest you get 30+% easily

Block isn't reliable, even at 60%. Trying to make it to high level on hardcore, which means I need reliable mitigation.

I feel like the big issue with melee in this game is that the damage they can usually/often avoid (many spells can be dodged) can be reduced, but that the damage they can't avoid (good luck never getting hit in melee when you can only deal damage in melee) really can't be properly mitigated.

Whoa is that really how it is? Indeed that's quite backward. Things which you cannot dodge with the mouse should rely on character attributes to mitigate. It's cheap if they cannot be mitigated.

That is pretty much how it is. If you look at the spreadsheet in my first post there is a chart comparison of physical vs magical mitigation. With how physical works, in order to reduce a 6k hit to a 3k hit, you would need 72000 armor (not even close to possible from what I'm aware of) but to reduce that same amount of magical damage you'd only need two decent resist all rings.

This wouldn't be a problem if physical damage wasn't so difficult to avoid, but it is.

Really? I think your math might be a bit off because when someone else posted a chart about charges and armor defense, in order to defend from 10,000 damage, you'd only need 70,000 armor and 1 endurance charge. (To reduce by 6,400 damage; he was discussing how to reduce the effectiveness of Vall's hammer attacks). With 5 endurance charges something like 40,000 armor was still needed though. So there -is- a problem the devs need to consider fixing, but it's not as bad as your exaggeration indicates.
I guess this is why it feels like there's no real advantage defensively as a marauder whether I go sword & board or a two hander.

Does a shield provide any useable armour and defence?

Shield provides good armor, and if you build for it, great armor/resists. By great I mean great relative to other pieces though. Getting 5k armor from a shield still doesn't reduce your actual damage taken from large hits by enough IMO.

To reduce a 10000 damage attack by 6400 with only one endurance charge, you would need to have a 59% damage reduction from armor. That corresponds to 172682 armor required.

% reduction = [armor value] / ([armor value] + 12 * damage taken)

In this case, 59% = 172682/ (172682+ 120000)

Yes, with more charges you can reduce it, but that doesn't say anything about the effectiveness of armor.
