Your problem is low life. 1.8k for merc for melee is too little. I had 2.8k. Lifesteal sucks when you have low life too. You're only lifestealing (0.15*1800 ) = 270 health per sec.

On topic, though, armor does need a buff. I understand GGG's design perspective where they didnt want you to be immune to phs dmg, but it's almost useless! Perhaps a balance should be struck where half the dmg taken is a flat reduction and half scales with the damage taken?
I agree as well. Luckily, the game JUST went open beta, so im almost 99% sure that within a couple months GGG will have the armor mechanics improved or DRASTICALLY changed.

Every time there's a change to the tree, everyone is given free full respecs. This is often because new nodes were added, old ones were removed, and previous tree paths are no longer valid. In the case where it's just number changing, GGG still gives out respecs in good faith.

Armor without endurance charges (read: requiring a change to endurance charges) should and likely will be looked at.

My question is: what am i stacking armor for? To reduce dmg to not be oneshotted or reduce dmg coming from mobs which already do nothing to me?

Theres a problem with fixing armor though... They have to do it in a way that it gives absolute reduction, BUT becomes much much harder to raise to higher %, or else it renders evasion completely worthless

Even with the current awful armor system, most people are STILL taking armor over evasion, so I can imagine once armor gets "fixed", evasion will become the next target of "is broken" threads

If you ask me they should buff both... Evasion should be much easier to cap, then it would be worth taking as well

Heck, they need to buff the hell out of everything that isnt HP nodes, then we would finally start seeing some build variety

Evasion is already believed to be completely useless by most people. Me being one of them.
I tried an Evasion character with Acrobatics. It was terrible compared to Iron Reflexes.

Most people are not taking armor willingly, people are taking armor because it comes with the gear
It is starting to get pretty sad that the high end is nothing but "path of kiting". I am so tired of seeing pretend melee builds that are in truth nothing but running away like a ranged class and taking shots with a ranged still that scales off from melee damage.

Even the most tanky of builds get to..... run away until they have spammed EC enough to fight for a little bit and then guess what... more running away.

As much as i love this game this anti-melee is getting dang old. I don't always want to play ranged and/or queasy-ranged. You know? running away gets old pretty quick.

Realize that the only part of the equation you can affect in the GIFT is the audience. Remove the audience and the trolls merely rant at the air.
Another problem is that armour or evasion mods and local % mods on gear are rolled in the same slot as life. Armour isn't a bad choice, but picking it over a life mod is not a good idea. This lowers the value of it even further. especially on items like gloves or boots where you can roll much tastier mods in the same affix.
