The Discharge Compendium

DISCLAIMER: Guides feature expensive gear however almost all of these builds work on a budget unless otherwise stated!

With the recent changes to reflect all of these builds can now confidently deal their large payloads of damage with a much reduced fear of instantly killing themselves!

What does Discharge Do?
Discharge is a skill that when used will consume all of your charges and deal damage based on the charges consumed. This damage per charge scales with the level of the discharge gem, all the way from levels 1-29. It currently stops at level29 as that is the maximum obtainable gem level. Power charges cause discharge to deal lightning damage, frenzy charges cause cold damage and endurance charges cause fire damage.

What are Charges?
Charges are temporary character buffs that provide a benefit, stack and are caused by various skill effects and mechanics. There are currently three types of charges in the game - Power charges, frenzy charges and endurance charges that all provide benefits to the character. The normal maximum amount of charges is 3, however there are 3 increases to the maximum of each charge on the tree, you can also gain one additional charge of the type you choose by helping the relevant bandit in merciless - Alira:Power, Kraityn:Frenzy, Oak:Endurance - and you can get charges on various pieces of gear.

What do Charges Do?

Power Charges - Power Charges provide a flat 50% increased critical strike chance per charge.

Endurance Charges - These provide 4% physical damage mitigation and 4% elemental resistance per charge.

Frenzy Charges - These grant 5% attack and cast speed per charge.

Do the Charges effect Discharge?
Discharge gains the benefits from the charges that are going to be consumed, so if you had 4 power charges and 2 frenzy charges when you discharge, your discharge would have an additional 200% critical strike chance and 10% cast speed for that cast.

Does Discharge have a target cap?
Unlike skills like Cyclone I do not believe that discharge has any current target cap which means that as long as the enemies are in range of the blast then they will be hit. This means that increased area of effect - including from gem quality - is amazing for discharge.

Where can I find the damage scalings for Discharge?
The Path of Exile Wiki page has a list of damage scalings up to level22, for beyond that you will have to experiment with the levels yourself which is something I will be doing as soon as I can get my hands on a Level21 Discharge gem.

Bandits: Oak --- Kill --- Oak

Why Eldritch battery? This allows us to reserve all of our mana for auras which makes gearing easier and make our chest plate more effective.

Why Zealot's Oath? With the usage of Eldritch battery we need a way to make to regenerate our Energy Shield and Zealot's Oath allows us to take advantage of the huge burst of life regen from enduring cry and apply it to casting our spells.

Why Unwavering Stance? If you get stunned whilst casting discharge the charges are consumed but no damage is dealt making unwavering stance a must.

Leveling
I would recommend leveling with Flame Totems no matter what league you are playing in, simply follow the build outline up until the level70 version.

Gearing

Jewels
Is a great jewel to use in the jewel socket just below Templar until you get good dexterity rolls on your jewellery.

General Jewels: Life - Fire Damage - Spell Damage - Area Damage are all good modifiers.

Mandatory Gear

This item or Lightning Coil is mandatory in the current state of the game to ensure that you are not being killed by the slightly overtuned physical damage in high level maps and Act 4

This item is mandatory for two reasons, first of all it allows you to have enough ES to use the Eldritch Battery/Zealot's Oath combination.
Secondly it allows you to achieve a 5 link for your single target skill.

Weapons: You're looking for sceptres with high fire and spell damage, anything else is nice but not necessary with the ultimate goal being atziri sceptres
Belt: Life/Resist belt is what you're looking for until you can get an atziri belt
Gloves: Life - Resists - Armour - Strength in that order of importance
Boots: Life - Resists - Armour - Strength in that order of importance
Amulet: Life - Spell/Fire Damage - Resists
Rings: Life - Resists - Fire Damage

My Gear

As you can see I still need some better jewellery to maximise my life rolls

Auras

Use either:
Purity of Fire: If you have a Cloak of Flame use this
OR
Purity of Lightning: If you have a Lightning Coil use this
AND
Determination: Increased armour for physical damage
Arctic Armour: Reduces incoming physical damage.

Reflect
You will not be able to run reflect maps but reflect rares will prove to be no issue for you.

Playstyle
The build plays quite smoothly, you want to curse the pack with warlord's mark, then you want to leap slam into the middle of the pack to proc fortify, then you want to cast enduring cry before finally casting discharge. If there are any rares left a quick flame surge should rapidly finish them off.

Against tanky single targets and bosses you simply want to pop a vaal clarity and spam flame surge in their face, if they deal a high amount of physical damage(second phase dominus for example) then you want to use leap slam and enduring cry to keep fortify and endurance charges up.

Map Mods
Currently the only two map modifiers that this build cannot run are no regeneration and elemental reflect, everything else will provide a varying level of difficulty depending on your current level of gear..

The Blue Flame Moose

About
This spec was originally created to mimic one of my favorite all time builds. The multicharge discharger from the Anarchy/Onslaught league was one of my favorite builds to play but due to the Voll’s Devotion neck no longer dropping the rolling 4 month leagues it was only playable in Standard/Hardcore to it's full potential however this is no longer the case and this build can utilise the neck once again. This build was pioneered as CI originally by Mollari and then later run by Pulp to great success.

Spec

Bandits: Help Oak --- Kill All --- Help Alira

Gear

Mandatory Item: Romira's Banquet, required for generating power charges via Incinerate

Recommend Item:
Kaom's Roots as the immunity to stuns makes the build feel much smoother to play.
Kingsguard provides 300 life on every discharge IF combined with either Enduring Cry or Voll's Devotion
Voll's Devotion for more damage
A shield instead of running dual daggers like myself if you value survivability in any way shape or form.

Overall you're looking for life, armour and capped resistances first and foremost on gear.

My Gear

Ignore gems in items - See gems section - Gear being used for other purposes again!

Gems

Chest: Discharge - Increased Area of Effect - Concentrated Effect - Lightning Penetration - Blood Magic - Life Leech

Helm/Gloves - Vaal Storm Call - Lightning Penetration - Increased Critical Damage - Blood Magic
Helm/Gloves - Incinerate - Lesser Multiple Projectiles - Curse on Hit - Elemental Weakness/Warlord's Mark
Shield - Arctic Armour - Wrath - Herald of Lightning

Wand - Lightning Warp - Faster Casting - Less Duration
OR
Dagger - Whirling Blades - Faster Attacks - Blood Magic

If you only have a 5link chestplate switch Elemental Weakness for Warlord's mark to provide you with much needed leech.

Playstyle
The playstyle of this build is generate all of your charges and expend them into a massive AOE that wipes the screen. This build uses Romira’s Banquet ring that allows for power charges on non critical hits. Since Incinerate has a base 0% crit chance and a very cast fast speed it can generate power charges VERY fast without running the risk critting and losing your power charges. Incinerate also serves a dual purpose by linking with Curse on Hit and applying Elemental Weakness to the targets it hits. Since you use all of your charges when you Discharge you will generate power charges and curse the next pack of mobs you are going to use Discharge on.

Auras

Wrath - Provides more lightning damage modifier plus flat lightning damage.
Herald of Lightning - More damage.
Arctic Armour - Desperately needed physical mitigation.

Map Mods

Avoid elemental reflect maps as you can and will kill yourself, handle no leech maps with care as your flasks will be important, otherwise just be wary of high damage modifiers.

Gems in items are wrong - See gems section!

Gems

Searing Touch: Discharge - Fire penetration - Chance to Ignite - Elemental proliferation - Life Leech - Increased Burning Damage
Searing Touch 2: Flame Blast - Concentrated Effect - Fire Penetration - Mana Leech - Life Leech - Spell Echo

Chest: Enduring Cry - Vaal Discipline - Immortal Call - Increased Area of Effect - Increased Duration

Helmet/Boots/Gloves: Discipline - Clarity - Grace - Enlighten
Helmet/Boots/Gloves: Molten Shell - Flammability - Faster Casting - Reduced Mana
Helmet/Boots/Gloves: Lightning Warp - Faster Casting - Less Duration

Auras

Grace - Provides additional armour which is much needed!
Clarity - Level to 10 for mana regen reasons
Discipline - Provides more ES which is again needed

Playstyle
The way this build should be played is to cast Molten Shell as you begin to approach a pack of monsters, then as you move towards them you need to curse them with flammability and then cast enduring cry. At this point you will have taken damage, popping the molten shell which leeches you some ES which grants you time to finally cast discharge, refilling your ES and killing all the mobs.

Map Mods
This build can run most map mods, however half-regen can be testing, no regen is impossible, minus max can be rough and elemental reflect is impossible.

Ghudda's Blood Mage

DISCLAIMER: THIS BUILD IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR HARDCORE - This is because you have almost 0 mitigation apart from your crazy damage output and Vaal Pact leech.

About
This build is based around making a cheap, high clear speed discharger and it does this very well. It is not the most defensive or stable build to run in end game maps but is ideal for starting a new league with. The build was originally made as a Scion by Ghudda but he now recommends playing it as a Shadow.

Bandits: Oak - Kill - Alira

Gear

Auras
To put it simply, you do not have any. This is because you are running blood magic which means that you would be reserving a percentage of your health and that simply is not sustainable in the current game state.

Playstyle
You throw icespears that are linked with GMP to gain powercharges nd then you curse the monsters with crit weakness. Finally you discharge with the powercharges you gained from the ice spears. If you really wanted to spice it up you could add an enduring cry to discharge with endurance charges aswell.

Map Mods
You can run every set of map mods except for elemental reflect and minus maximum resists. You could potentially run these mods but there is a good chance you will kill yourself multiple times.

Hyperbear's Righteous Discharger

About
I created this build after trying and failing to find a viable way to work with the old searing touch based burning discharger in higher end maps I decided to make a more tanky version using a shield. From here I progressed to using high fire resistance to counter reflect instead of vaal pact. I then realised that with my higher fire resistance I could use righteous fire as a large damage steroid. This all occurred during the Ambush league and a lot has changed since then but in this guide you will find the latest iteration of the build.

Spec
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAwAA2E2UoNpiaHQYVvnoQYe3PoPM_go8Ldi98kXGroNfNZI64cT2DF8LYf6Pplcn7XKpHKevbE3jBg4ZLqyqValTpWjy1HzZYVnzl7TwH3wOCfatjVcNnz4aOHIPagGiAKdVz37SIZZs85vxrC3SkFVxhZRvZp4Es1ug8kGezZHOaGUpLicvVynzEWZU-tLAZoIHpzB8uEbXsUIWbx0UPAWfywHnGj7jaiSqEmnvfJ_fFE1fPzbpFxyaO_xL9kgUIBpscXmCm7yfxFjvDp2uGJFQRwN1kStYd18E

Bandits: Oak --- Kill --- Oak

Leveling
I would not transition to this build until at least level 70 because you want to be able to sustain righteous fire, you need level20 Purity of Fire to make sure you can sustain righteous fire. I would recommend leveling as flameblast with either lifesprig, a +1 fire gems wand or searing touch or simply leveling as flame totem.

Gems

Chestplate: Discharge - Fire Penetration - Chance to Ignite - Elemental Proliferation - Iron Will -Empower

Helmet/Boots/Gloves:Enduring Cry - Warlord's Mark - Increased Area of Effect - Blood Magic
Helmet/Boots/Gloves:Righteous Fire - Increased Area of Effect - Concentrated Effect - Increased Burning Damage
Helmet/Boots/Gloves:Leap Slam - Faster Attacks - Fortify - Blood Magic

Weapon: Purity of Fire - Vitality - Determination
Shield: Immortal Call - Increase Duration - Blood Magic

Gearing

Mandatory Items

My Gear

Ignore the gems socket in the items, I am using the items for other builds and therefore they are incorrect!

You need Rise of the Phoenix to make this build work and that is all you need except for a 5link. The reason rise of the phoenix is so neccessary is because it has the +8% Maximum Fire Resistance which means that we can then begin to run Righteous Fire without degenerating our life.

If you're a lower level then you can use a shaper seed amulet in order to meet the life regeneration requirements of the build.

Your overall goals for gear are high life and armour in order to make yourself as tanky as possible against the currently high physical damage levels in Act 4 and maps.

Auras

Purity of Fire - This is a neccessity for running Righteous fire.
Vitality - This can be a good option for before you have all the needed life regeneration or for running reduced regeneration/vulnerability maps.
Determination - Use this if not running vitality in order to gain more physical mitigation
Purity of Elements - A good option instead of Vitality/Determination for Elemental Weakness maps.

Playstyle
The build plays quite smoothly, as you run towards a pack you want to cast warlord's mark, you then want to leap into the pack, cast enduring cry and finally hit discharge. This allows you to quickly and easily clear entire screens, occassionally rare mobs will survive, this is where Righteous Fire shines. For bosses you can swap to flame surge/flame blast or you can just stand ontop of the boss with righteous fire. This largely depends on gear level of your character and how much you can face tank.

Map Mods
Reduced regeneration and vulnerability can be an issue depending upon your level of regeneration and access to uniques like shaper seed. Elemental reflect can be run by simply playing like an Righteous Fire build. No regeneration and minus maximum resists should be avoided at all costs.

Gameplay

I apologise in advance for the poor quality in the videos, unfortunately my recording software kind of sucks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFx3eXtwIg8

This gameplay is old but doesn't really need to be replaced as the build still plays the same now as it did back then.

Fakener(Cast on Crit Discharge)

Notice: The version of CoC Discharge I have written up in this guide is tankier than the version Mathil has created but at the cost of some damage, it also is designed to be an easier transition into Mjolner Discharge, however if you're thinking about playing CoC Discharge I recommend checking out his guide which can be found HERE

About
This build uses cast on critical strike to trigger discharge with a voll's protector to generate power charges and cyclone as the attack of choice. It does a lot of damage but at the cost of destroying your fps and being a semi-glass cannon.

Spec
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAwAAOygDlm49YEO-gIMJb56cpMpK8bOHE1FMX7BLV3cHrEebtcDjfVvDOoTFKk0i6iSLKjhH4j8nAO4tVejWD6si4krILOkWqgW1Fr9tbKQ5bqoVIIazPdGNvyaVtUg2PbXy3Q0FfVFHYeLz6uywnao1kluv51QwfFVLKguMC2KsbIz-j9i9FHUNjST9jX2MNnBSuXxN4_4KGNuHdv_eI_aJ06ZX8kW3PnTxZ6Djn02ScNU64YPMKaVKfV3yPC0OSMaug18RlsT2Bx6QG3KplS5wVvcy8NWaE5J9SVHb1NwjmG_lzw==

Bandits: Oak - Kraityn - Alira

Gear

Mandatory Items

This chest plate is needed in order to generate the power charges that will be expended with Discharge.

A dagger similar to this(good crit and attack speed rolls) is necessary in order to ensure that you are achieving enough CoC procs.

Recommended Items

Overall the aim for gear is to get high armour/evasion and capped resists/life, rat's nest and maligaro's are great because they provide good evasion whilst also providing high damage through both critical strike chance and attack speed. Jewellery/Boots/Shield should be used to try and make up for the resistances that could not be obtained on the other pieces of gear.

Auras

Wrath - For large amounts more damage
OR
Grace - Provides armour through Iron Reflexes
AND
Arctic Armour - Provides more mitigation
Herald of Lightning - Provides damage and the means for Curse on Hit

Gems

Chest: Cyclone - Cast On Critical Strike - Discharge - Blood Magic - Life Leech - Ice Nova
Helmet/Gloves/Boots - Whirling Blades - Fortify - Blood Magic - Faster Attacks
Helmet/Gloves/Boots - Herald of Lightning - Curse on Hit - Assassin's Mark - Vengeance
Helmet/Gloves/Boots - Cast When Damage Taken - Immortal Call -- Grace/Wrath - Arctic Armour
Weapon/Shield - Vaal Haste - Vaal Grace - Increased Duration
Weapon/Shield - Enduring Cry - Blood Magic - Increased Area of Effect

Map Mods
You can run any map modifiers except for elemental reflect.

Gameplay

Mjolner Discharger - Life

About
This guide will cover how to setup and run a life based, non crit variant of the Mjolner Discharger which is the tankier and cheaper variant, however it is not the only variant and as such I also recommend checking out the Rainbownuke variant as created by Tom94.

Levelling
This build can transition quite nicely off the CoC Discharger from the previous build if you set up the character without the gear backing but with this as the ultimate goal, however if you're starting the character with the gear already obtained I would recommend levelling with a 2handed weapon build such as Sweep or Cyclone and using good levelling weapons to carry you up until you can equip the Mjolner.

Spec
http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAwAAOygDlm49YEO-gIMJb57KSvGzUUxfsEtXrEebtcDjfVvDOoTFKk0Ziio4R-I_JwDu-wki4krILOn22qQ5bqoVIIazGo-18t0NNZJbr_6P2L06sxR1DY2QCk3j_goY24d2plfyRbc-dPFnoOOfOuGDzCmlSn08Lcaug1_E9gxfxBVyqX31r6ccp6yqVan3MhzOU6VZ85e06hh82StQGjhyD2oBdqwNzZBVcYWUb2aez37-VCcvVynzEWZU-tIWQK2NRtexQhZvFy-FfeNqJKpk5zbpVdaApA==

Bandits: Oak - Kill - Alira

In order to meet the requirements for the usage of Mjolner we use two unique jewels,
placed in the socket below and to the left of Profane Chemistry and
placed in the socket to the left of Vaal Pact.

Other jewels should aim for a combination of life and area/spell/lightning damage

Gear

Gems

Mjolner - Discharge - Life Leech/Lightning Penetration - Arc
Chest - Molten Strike - Greater Multiple Projectiles - Blood Magic - Fortify - Multistrike - Faster Attacks
Gloves/Boots/Helm - Leap Slam - Fortify - Faster Attacks - Blood Magic
Gloves/Boots/Helm - Cast When Damage Taken - Immortal Call - Warlord's Mark - Increased Duration
Gloves/Boots/Helm - Blood Rage - Enduring Cry - Increased Duration - Blood Magic
Shield - Determination - Grace - Haste

Auras

Grace - More armour for scary physical damage maps
OR
Haste - More damage for easier maps
AND
Determination - More armour for physical mitigation

Map Mods
You can run anything except elemental reflect

Playstyle
Simply Leap Slam into the pack of monsters and then go wild with your molten strike and the hammer will do the rest.
