complete computer freeze shouldn't be caused by wine.
When it happen next time, try to press ctrl+alt+backspace (aka X restart) or ctrl+alt+f1 (to get to terminal) from there you can investigate what happen or kill wine... Also try to take a look into /var/log/messages if there is anything interesting prior to freeze.

Thanks for your quick answer. i'll remember the X restart keys, though this time it does nothing (nor does ctrl+alt+F1)...
However, after having restarted and crashed the game a couple of times, i re-tried the "change gateway" trick (selecting Americas then re-selecting Europe) and the bug is gone... weird...
Thanks anyway :)

this was supposed to be fix with the 0.10.1e, weird...
I am trying to run through PlayOnLinux but I get the following error. I have msvc100 added by installed components and set to (native, builtin). vcrun2010 and dx9_36 also installed.

I'm not sure in your case whether it will make a difference or not, but have you tried using wine 1.5.24 in PlayOnLinux? Just install it into PlayOnLinux using the Tools->Manage Wine Versions option, then install the 32-bit (and optionally 64-bit) 1.5.24 version. Once that is installed, click on Path of Exile once then click Configure. On the first tab there should be a dropdown you can select the wine version, and 1.5.24 should be listed then. Select it then try launching PoE again.

Also, double check in the Configure screen go into the Wine tab and click Configure Wine and check the Libraries tab that pops up and make sure the overrides lists "*msvcr100.dll (native, builtin)" [as well as d3dx9_36].

If all that stuff looks fine and it still won't run then I'm out of ideas as the error specifically points to something within msvcr100 not being where it thinks it should.

Perhaps try making a clean prefix and going back through the step-by-step of creating a new clean PoE prefix on the thread a few pages back (somewhere in the 50's I want to say).

Edit: Here is the quick link to get you to the step-by-step PlayOnLinux clean prefix install.

Making a clean prefix worked for me. Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated.
Does POE store files anywhere but the install folder? Like storing a few hundred megabytes somwhere in the claimed used directory, or using one of the 2 tmp folders?

Yes, the My Documents folder for your user name in your Wine prefix. That's usually linked to your home folder so check there. It's the "My Games" folder. The config and login and minimap files are all in there.
Well, it's installed and running now, however I'm only getting about 20FPS. :(

Go into the Video options and try setting everything to the lowest setting to start off with (including disabling shadows and post processing).

After doing that, you can tweak things to get them to perform better.

I found in my case, I do not like the shadows, but my NVidia GTX 660 seems to perform better at some of the higher settings, so that's what I stuck with. It's a matter of trial and error. I know the ATI cards have some other issues right now that nvidia can get around because they can disable GLSL and ATI users cannot.
