It can't.

Hey hello there !

I was wondering if it was possible to play that with 1H sword instead of mace.
Yes I admit that when I'm preparing myself to play a char so much time I want it to look good even if it's a little less efficient, and i am crazy about swords, right.... I was tempted to go 2H sword but survivability... and i wanted to try a block build for once.

But this entire part of the forum is all about maces (even for 2h build).
Can someone explain me why ?
Is that because unique swords 1H are not enough good - see http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Sword for reference - in comparison with what we can achieve with maces ?

I would gladly appreciate any input on the topic.

edit : by the way, yes, never played marauder and wanted to use the darkshrine event as an occasion to do one... and thats why i choose the 1h weap + shield because I doubted that with the 2H builds I would survive long, when i see the insane Spike damage on the vids on high level maps.

For most things, maces are better than swords, yes. For this build, one of the main reasons is that maces are better for sustaining mana with mana leech. With swords, you'd have problems.

Ah well I dreaded that answer...

Still, pardon me, I don't really get it, why would it be "more" possible for a mace to have mana leech and not for a sword ? It doesn't exist as an implicit mod, does it ?
(although the implicit mod for the Behemoth mace is really cool, i will admit that).
Is it about attack speed and mana on hit, is that what you mean ?

And axes then ?

Anyway, just got ice crash, that spell is just so nice, graphically speaking, you gotta love it !
No, no, you got me all wrong. What I'm trying to say is, WHEN you have mana leech, be it from any piece of your gear (most commonly on rings/amulets, but possible on gloves and a rare weapon), or from your passive tree (either some passive nodes or a jewel), utilizing that mana leech which you do have is better with a mace than with a sword for your overall mana sustainability.

Let me give you an example. If you have 0.6% of physical damage leeched as mana, using a sword will mean your attacks are faster, but hit for less physical damage per hit, compared to a mace, which means those 0.6% will be too little and too slow for your sword. Maces have slower attack speed, but deal more damage per hit, which means you will get a bigger amount of mana leeched PER HIT (because leech is based on the amount of physical damage you deal), and since you attack slower, it will be enough to regenerate mana in time for your next attack(s).

I hope you got it now :)

Oh yes, thanks for the explanation, it's totally clear. Yeah mana consumption seems indeed heavy for this skill :)
Glad to help!

In other news, the newly announced support gem is HUGE news for melee builds like this one: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1475604

Nice gem indeed... the 25% mana reservation.... the only thing that comes to my mind is running it with warlords mark for mana issues...
But now we have to work that in with the other aura's....

Any chance you could put up a skill tree for a Templar for this same build? Thanks!
