it would make sense for this recipe to be very expensive...so as not to render chromatics useless...

This could potentially mean that for 6 socket weapons you have to RGB link them, then white socket and then proceed to manually 6 link it. That doesn't sound too pleasant but it would be very worth it for swapping in mana leech on my dom blow and IIR/IIQ gems.

The vendor recipe mentioned by the OP has as much chance to create white socketed items as the chance of GGG fixing pet AI which has been broken since at least Jan 2013!
