Solo endgame -- what to expect?
|
Alright, so I was thinking about buying a supporter pack. You know, to show my support for the game and, well, the goodies are sort of nice, too.
I almost clicked the "Buy" button. But then I started thinking. I don't have a regular group to play with, and most of the time I end up playing solo. So what do I have to look forward to? I am level 67 and the xp grind is becoming annoying. It's not a nice, relaxing grind, either: losing concentration means a waste of a *lot* of time. What's left? Maps? I tried soloing one, it was mildly entertaining, except for the part where the boss ate all xp I got clearing the rest of the map. Challenges? I tried a couple of those and they didn't look particularly interesting. Am I missing something here? Because so far the rest of the game looks to me -- a solo player -- like it's going to be somewhere between uninteresting and painful. I hope I am wrong about this. (Please don't take this as a QQ: it is entirely possible that the endgame of PoE is simply not for me. I am perfectly fine the possibility of not playing it and, well, spending my money on something else.) |

The content you're at is pretty much what you have for now. My recommendation is to play different characters with wildly different specializations. If all you want is to progress down the path to unstoppable godliness and a simple, easy grindfest, Path of Exile is unlikely to entertain you in the endgame. That being said, I hope you find it to be worth playing in the future, but PoE is more entertaining on the journey than at the destination.
Also, if you haven't already, might I suggest trying TL2? It has an integrated modkit, so there's never a lack of novel ways to experience the game at any difficulty level. If I have two fish, and you have three fish, how many fish do we have?
None. These are MY fish. |

" Mapping is quite fun. Each map is unique with its own stats and the meta game of progressing thru maps is quite entertaining to me. I map primarily solo and play at my own progression. more of a challenge and less of a lag fest. 67 is still a baby. Heck my 82 is still a baby too. Personally, I think the map system is a genius end game compared to D2/3. In D2 we did the same boss over and over and over....1,000s of times....and we were thankful for it. Why? Because kids in Africa couldn't kill Diablo 1,000/ of times. Plus, new expansion early this year? What! And new and interesting items added every couple of weeks. Def should support. I am once they combine my packs. |

Personally, I roll new characters once I experience what I wanted from my current one (usually in the low-to-mid 60s). This allows me to refine that build for a future reroll and to try a range of things, instead of just sticking to one build for a bajillion hours.
I solo pretty much exclusively, and take the game at my own pace. If you want a regular group, try to find a guild that you fit into well/make one and try to entice like-minded individuals to join. If you plan on solo endgame, well, it's an ARPG, so you're meant to just grind out levels once you've beaten the core content (so in our case, maps is where you'll be). " I play solo, I spend *very little if any* (ugh) time trading currency, and I have a shop thread where most of my stuff is listed for 1 chaos. That's the extent of my community interaction as far as the in-game economy is concerned. You can easily get your character to the low 80s playing solo, having found very little in terms of sellable drops or particularly rare currency. You can do this almost entirely by mapping. Piety runs are not necessary. You can also do this with relatively cheap gear. My advice is to try to have fun with it, and don't overgrind. If your character feels weak or dies easily, think about why that is happening. Maybe your node allocation isn't ideal, or your gear doesn't have the right mods on it. Maybe your gem allocations (expect to be on 4Ls) can be improved. You might want to roll a new character if you need to change too many things. If you're frustrated with the endgame, take a break. Maybe make a new char later. It's easy to forget how solid the game feels early on, and you'll have plenty of currency to have fun rushing a new char through normal/cruel. Or, you can ignore the currency in your stash if that feels like cheating. Or, you can do races a bit. They can be fun. (Though, this season the race schedule is a bit unfriendly...) I expect melee classes hit a much harder wall than I hit using an acrobatics-based archer, but I can only speak to my own experience. IGN: SplitEpimorphism

Get gud, faceroll maps. It really comes down to your build and gear. If they're somewhat decent you should be able to faceroll maps and level up quickly to like 80. Past 80 it becomes quite tedious I guess, so reroll and repeat the above :P

It is basically the same end game as parties. You do maps. The only major difference is that its quite a bit harder to sustain your map pool beyond 70. Outside of that, it is basically the same.
