I just cleared the 6ex-ish mark a week or so ago, and it was only because I have gotten REALLY lucky on exalt drops. 3 so far.
Care to elaborate? Why is this a problem?

Because with current drop rates, the only way to obtain 50 exalts in less than 5 years of play for a very lucky player is to trade and not grind.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure if there is a method out there to reward people who grind more than they trade, because trading intrinsically tends to maximize economic efficiency.

Drop rates really don't have nearly as much to do with it as you might think. If exalts dropped far more often, the prices on items would simply rise to match that, but there would still be some people who were far richer than others.

In any game where the prices are entirely up to the players to set, there will also always be some people willing to pay more than others for items. There will always be people who massively overpay for something they need. There will always be people who don't know what something is worth and sell it for a fraction of its true value. There will always be people who DO know what it's worth and still sell cheap so they can get rid of it and not have to spend all day in trade chat. And there will always be people who take advantage of all of the above.

Also, there will always be players whose wealth vastly surpasses the average.

In Anarchy Online there was a player named Ghandalf, who basically ran the entire game for the server I was on. He was a member of Omni where I was a member of clan, even though we were members of opposing factions almost all high-level deals went through him.. simply due to his wealth. He played the game 24/7 for years, was the leader of the most powerful Omni guild.

My point is that some folks can devote a lot of time to a game and as a result can manipulate/control the marketplace to a certain degree.

True, but this is most painful in games where more casual players can't earn a small sum during the few hours they play, most of the time due to RNG or just bad rewards. Or when there is a big gap between the drop rate of actual good items and bad items.

In GW2 some players were dominating the market by playing a lot or getting really lucky. This got better as soon as you got guaranteed rewards for things like daily dungeons. More casual players could log on, do their daily dungeons and slowely progress without having to spend 8 hours a day to increase their chances of getting that one drop.

Some things were still out of reach for the more casual players, but it was less sour because cash wasn't that hard to come by and the few items that were out of reach were purely cosmetic.

I think Vanilla WoW also had a frustrating economy untill they changed some things. Seems like in both games it was a big plus when it became feasible to make steady currency without relying on other players or RNG.

This sort of exists in PoE with farming alterations, only problem is that alterations aren't worth that much. They are easy to come by while the better orbs can't be purchased and have to come from fairly rare drops. Meanwhile good uniques have a really low drop rate due to all the crap ones hanging around so those few that are good are rather expensive. The combination of both make it so that the gap between low value currency / high value currency and good items / bad items, is fairly large.

Because its EXACTLY d3 all over again, why cant you people see this? Grinding is a waste of time because it is not rewarding due to drop rates being low for the fucking ECONOMY. So people sit in trade or the forums and get wealth and just like real life the wealthy dictate the prices in game, poor fucks that that dont trade all day cant afford upgrades. So people go to RMT just so they can progress end game to try and actually try and find something. Its a joke.


Lets all hate on d3 and the AH but ignore that the exact same issue is here.

I think some partial solution could be

-up the drop rate of rare amulets and rings Just to boost the usefulness of the chaos orb recipe.

-including recipes for nearly (if not all) every orb. Ofcourse with ensuring that some orbs are harder to come by than others. (Perhaps a unique recipe for exalted?)

-The better currency could also use an increase in drop rate, might make crafting more fun aswell.

-Removing some of the clutter uniques or improving the drop rate on some of the better ones could also be an options (e.g : Most of the uniques I get from Piety are so bad I couldn't even sell them for free). There are many bad/reasonable uniques and just a select few really good ones.
