What Games Are You Playing Currently?
" Demos are always so misleading. The experience is always so contained and structured that it's not really indicative of the actual game. You also never really get enough play time to make a sound judgement on the quality of the game. Obviously it makes sense that devs would want to cast their game in the best light possible. Still, I've seen devs blatantly lying and releasing demos that simply do not accurately showcase the game at all. It's like a movie trailer for a terrible movie where the studio just puts all the best clips into the trailer to try to sell tickets. Or just as commonly, when the studio crafts the trailer in way that makes the movie seem like something completely different than what it is. Forum Sheriff

Well that why i take every game demo with a grain of salt. It even says on most games that the demo may not accurately portray the final game. You can't blame a developer for not showing the bugs still in the game and instead showing off other things.
I do however have a problem with blatant misinformation about features in a product. I can understand if you say that you were going to have a strong sidekick in the game and it has to be nerfed in game otherwise it is too easy, but saying there will be complete free roam and giving the player a very linear experience is just wrong. Developers should not make promises their butts can't cash. Over-hyping games usually works against you in the long run.(Peter Molyneux) Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.

Yes sometimes reviewers are off. Zidjian said it right; I loved some games that were put down by reviewers. Monster Hunter is a great example, it got horrible reviews from most sites, but I loved that game more than most. Driver 3 is another one, i don't love that game but its better than the media made it out to be.

" To your first point, I think that we're not on the same page as per what constitutes content. I think that in my post it's important to note that a boring game would always be rated as terribly flawed. In order to be rated well, the game has to be well paced, interesting, well told, and its playability must be high. Small bugs here or there tend not to majorly detract from games. The content doesn't really matter to me... just that whatever it is, that there are not major flaws. Content in my terms is just a variable that differs from game to game. As to your second point, I feel that looking at multiple sources for reviews isn't that fruitful. I find that, just like any other critical review, it's best to find someone that reviews things as you would review them. This can be achieved by actually reviewing something (food, movies, games, whatever) and then comparing your reviews to reviews of others. If your reviews are always really close to someone else's, then you can safely rely on what they have to say about things in the future. That is effectively what I've done with Yahtzee. I've compared my reviews with many other review sites, and felt that none of them consistently felt the way I did about games, but I feel that at the heart of the critical argument... Yahtzee gets it right and tells it how it is. It's just a bonus that he's ultra hilarious. If you have account problems please Email Support

Demo's for sure. Nothing sucks more than buying a game that looks awesome only to have it be a disappointment. While it is true you must take demo's with a grain of salt (Zidjian quote), it's a great way to see if a game plays as well as it looks.

As far as RTS games go, it's a lot like Starcraft Broodwar. I'm sure that's a tremendous surprise... XD
Mechanically, it's a lot easier than Broodwar because the interface isn't incredibly outdated, but it's still challenging to play. Strategically.... Well, the game is still young and being actively patched, so strategy can be a bit volatile. |
