A self-found purist's feedback [Long]

A lot of what the OP wrote here is arguments used for why people want a Self Found League. So that drops aren't based around trading.

Too many people say well why don't you just play self found right now. Well just like the OP here the game isn't much fun self found. You can't even begin to hope that you will find any decent uniques without playing 5 thousand hours and even then who knows if you will get anything you need.

I read somewhere that apparently GGG is not going to make a self found league, not sure if someone can confirm this

I can confirm this, I've read the original statement made by GGG that they want to encourage trading, and will not build a locked-down league. I am unable to find the original source though, I think it was on Reddit.

It's a shame that they still build hardcore league - the truth is, you can simple delete the player after they die. So why have hardcore league?

If they ever make a self-found league, I will only play that league.
As I reached the point where a unique drop did not anymore result into excitement but rather a "oh another chaos orb" feeling i just started playing less and less...

I have maybe 50 uniques that I can't even say that about. I really want to get out of these tainted leagues.

Paid for/custom leagues. Surely these will optionally be locked down, assuming the pricing is reasonable (or I get invited to one or something) I won't touch an open league again.
Solid post, OP. I agree with most of what you said.

The problem is that all thats going to happen is that PoE will eventually gravitate towards an AH system, even if its 3rd party made.

There will reach a point where there are so many uniques/mods/items, that the only way to obtain the gear needed for a certain build is to use an AH like system, which will be done primarily by trading currency and then obtaining the item you want

As it stands, crafting currently is only really done andgame and in races (for different reasons). The overwhealming use of currency is as a substitute for gold
Self-found is kinda doable, if:

* you do a cheap build that doesnt require specific gear and gets most gems from quests
* accept you'll have to level your gems twice, or use sub-par non-Q skills
* forget about OP uniques and accept you'll get the same trash over and over
* in general lower you expectations about OP gear considerably
* you dont play maps

But even then:

* you could wait till lvl 82, 90 hours of gameply into a league, for a fkin granite flask drop
* you could still wait till lvl 86 now, 130 hours of gameplay into a league, for a fkin mana leech gem drop
* you could totally wreck your orb reserves, trying to 5-link something, that you could buy for 4 chaos from the shoping mall

& other unpleasantries...

The statistical chance of getting a good item is just too low for self-found to be really viable. You can complete the game with what you find, but there's no way to build up a really strong character, so most of the long-term appeal of the game is completely absent. You can and will spend all of your currency trying to roll good items, week after week, and just never get anything remotely useful. You can and will go weeks without finding any good uniques.

I'd go so far as to say it's entirely pointless to play self-found in the 4-month leagues because it takes more than four months for a self-found player to build up the kind of character that is the point of this game. PoE isn't about beating Piety on merciless or whatever, that's not going to satisfy anyone. You want a build and a character that feels sort of complete in a way, like a fully formed entity where all the pieces fit together. This is what people play for. It can't be done self-found, trading is utterly required in this game.

Look at the statistics behind this stuff. People are reporting that it takes thousands of alterations just to roll the Tyrannical mod on a weapon. Thousands of fusings to 6-link an item. How many have ever found one of those uniques that define a character? The odds are such that four months of constant play leave you almost guaranteed never to find one. Chance orbs? Takes hundreds to get a unique out of it, some people literally never have despite trying since the game opened a year ago.

PoE is so wildly anti-solo, so blatantly must-trade-for-everything, that it's almost like a simulation of D3 in that regard rather than the game that does right everything that D3 did wrong. Considering how popular self-found is and how easy it would be for GGG to create a self-found league with more accomodating rules, it's frankly unforgivable that they refuse to do it out of some nonsensical principle. It's absolutely as if they just hate self-found players and refuse to help them in any way.
I don't find being self found all that difficult. I find that your first char always has to have the most flexibility because it will be the one you find gear for other builds on. Unfortunately, the Scion is really the only flexible character. Both in their tree starting position and in the gem rewards.

Yeah, most uniques are trash or obscure, but that's the way GGG wanted them. They didn't really want most uniques to be BiS; they wanted rares to be the most powerful, and for the most part, they accomplished that.

The crafting system needs some work, I'll agree with that. Drop rates are abysmal, even on "lower" level currencies like GCP and Chaos.
Everyone always talks about why no self found league.

Thing is, you can play self found in any league

So the real reason there is no self found league, there is no NEED for one.

Self found league idea is really just a closeted idea saying "I want drops to be improved because I don't trade"

Please stop discussing it as 'we need a seperate league for solo self found' because it would be identical to the current leagues if you play self found
