I dont know about others but the only reason i prefer perma over short allocation is because i get some kind of delay whenever i pick soemthing up, so in short allocation others are almost always faster in getting the item because by the time i can pick it up the timer ran out and someone took it.

I do play short and even ffa allocation from time to time though.
