[PSA] How To Tell If PoE Is Dying

Hey guys,

I'm here bringing you a short informative guide into whether or not Path of Exile is dying or not. I've seen a few of these posts emerging again and I wanted to share my insight. I will first describe the method that includes why it works and then show you how to apply the mothod.

- The Method -

Check websites that show analytics about the Path of Exile website. By checking page views and trends between information provided by websites specializing in providing analytics, one is able to determine whether or not Path of Exile is dying or not.

You: "But Destro, people who visit the website aren't necessarily playing the game."

While this is true, what we are doing is gauging interest in the game. Since the website is about Path of Exile the game, one can transitively correlate interest in the Path of Exile website into interest in the game. Essentially what we are saying is that "Path of Exile isn't dying because there are people still interested in the game." Even if there were no players in the game but there were millions of page views by players interested in the game, I would argue that Path of Exile is not dead. If you disagree that with this logic, then the method I am providing is not something you should use.

I'd like to make it very clear that it is possible that the PoE website receives traffic for non-obvious reasons which would skew the results. For example maybe tons of website developers are visiting the web site and never have any intent to play the game? Maybe the website is being visited by some huge organization all the time? While these factors are possible they are very unlikely.

- How To Do It -

Simply check out Path of Exile analytics on a few websites. It's important you use more than one website. I recommend using at least two websites with three being good and more being best. Don't worry, I already entered in Path of Exile into a few example websites for all you lazy people. :)

As you can see, the general trend on all three websites is pretty similar. The game spiked during Open Beta and has settled into a pretty normal trend. I'd say that the game is probably about as popular as it has ever been since March. As well, Open Beta led to a permanent increase in the average number of players compared to Closed Beta.

There you go! You're now able to accurately tell whether or not Path of Exile is dying or not!

As long as I can log in and play my characters, it's not dead. That's the only thing you need to go on.

id say the actual number of ppl playing everyday is higher than it shows in website statistics, most of ppl i know play the game and dont visit forums nor site.

Blizzard also states that D3 has "millions of users everyday" & yet within the gaming community it is seen as a dead game. Just sayin'.

If by dead you mean 'has zero players' then yeah it's not dead but there is no doubt in my mind that many many players have left the game or are on hiatus. The forums are a circlejerk of the same few names & leaderboards have remained static for a while. On a personal note my 100 friends from CB are now down to a list of 3 players online at any one time, many of them never even returned to try OB even though for the most part my fr list was comprised of the 'top' players in CB.

POE may not be dead but it sure as hell isn't living up to it's potential & it would take a very blinkered view to not realise many people have left in frustration.

Fact is however that as an ARPG this game does not rely on a giant playerbase like an MMO.
The games hardcore nature does only attract a niche playerbase.

EvE Online only has 30k-50k (if not less, I can't remember excact numbers) players online
in a huge universe and feels lively in general. It is all about the socialization tools and opportunities, which need to be established and polished.
In that concern PoE has yet to go a long way.
