XP Level Penalty should be reworked

The current XP level penalty is kinda rediculous... moving on past 80 becomes about impossible due to map drop rates. I understand limiting EG items from high level maps but the extreme reduction in XP that you start to get from doing lower level zones (which is practically required due to maps starting at 66 and Lunaris only being 68). Why not introduce either a more tapered XP reduction or possibly remove it all together for zones 68+. That right now is my biggest problem with progression in this game.

I know Chris has said they are working on that but that was at the introduction of patch 11 and we havent heard anymore about whats to come. No idea how the end of A3 and A4 will progress level wise or how it will affect map levels.

Some information regarding this would be great if possible.. otherwise please just take this as feedback that its getting boring to get less and less XP the more I play this game. I've already leveled about 6-7 toons upto the 70 range and 2 into the 80s. Dont know what else to do while waiting for more "content". Would love to finish leveling toons to 100 but that doesnt seem possible with this XP penalty.

(BTW... Thanks for the reduction of death penalty.. 15 was to extreme and the 8% proposed I think was to low... 10% has been about perfect so far. Its nice and round and isnt a complete trash of an entire nights work.)

Thanks GGG!

You can reach 90 without even doing 1 single map!

Firstly, if you are suggesting a rework you should actually suggest one, just saying it needs to be is like saying "They need to improve balance", it is so vague it is not going to help in any way or promote discussion.

Secondly, the xp penalty is there because you shouldn't be dying. So if you are, that is a problem.

Thirdly, as tnt said, you can get higher than level 80 if you really want to.

Finally, the game ENDS at level 68. Do you see that? Act 3x will expand it further, but if you are levelling a character past level 73/75 ish, you are outlevelling the content, and the only reason maps exist is for those people who are determined to level to 100.

There is really not much point continuing to play after level 68, complaining that you level slow is like complaining that when you are level 60 in a level 33 zone you level slowly, its because you really shouldn't be doing that

I think the OP meant the XP penalty for leveling on monsters lower than yourself, not the one for dying.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

Also in Single Player? ;) Reaching level 80 without Maps and without partying is already pretty hard imho. I play alone and have a good but also hard time in PoE.
However, I guess 10% XP loss in mercyless is OK, at least up to Level 80 or so. From Level 90+ I guess even 10% loss are to much but I know some time in the future, there will be new acts with new Mobs, maybe you fight level 90 Mobs there so leveling is "normalized" again.

I could get 5-10% of lvl 90-91 in Lunaris in a day if I wanted, solo, MFing the fucker to boot.
Casually casual.

I agree, my stock of characters between 80 and 89 is getting silly. For the love of god GGG either do something or at least tell people if and when you will do something.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
To answer what a few people have said..

First I did suggest that the XP Level penalty should be flattened on the top end.. Here is the current formula..

Final Experience = [(PlayerLevel + 5) / (PlayerLevel + 5 + EffectiveDifference^2.5)]^1.5

Effective difference is anything more than the levels effective play zone where it receives no XP Penalty.. this is the [(PlayersLevel/16)+3] which for level 80 is 8 zones.. Level 80 can play from zone 72 to zone 88 with no penalty. Any zone outside that starts the effective difference. 72 being the bottom of my effective play zone is 4 more than 68. Ergo my effective difference in this case is 4.

Final Experience = [(80+5)/(80+5+4^2.5)]^1.5 or more simply... 61.9%

Now.. when I hit 81 I will have an effective difference of 5.... which becomes 47.1%

Theres a bit of an extreme loss here that starts scaling pretty nasty... Im just asking for something along the lines of about 5% XP for every Effective Level difference. Something thats not that serious and is some what more predictable and linear.

Now for those of you claiming to do Lunaris 3 at 90...

[(90+5)/(90+5+14^2.5)]^1.5 == 3.8%

You get less than 4% of the monsters XP per kill... so monsters that give 40k XP give you 1520XP. You need 160,890,604XP to go from 90 to 91... lets say your killing monsters that give 40K normal XP.. you get 1,520XP you would have to kill about a thousand monsters to get 1%. I would guess that theres about 150ish monsters in Lunaris 3.. maybe 200 tops on full clears or so... that would be 5 full clears for you to make 1% and 500 full clears to make 91.

[Edit----Personally... if I had my druthers... I would swap the XP penalty and the drop penalty around... insane drop penalties and minimal XP penalties would be cool to me.]

so basically you would like to be able to hit level 100 in crappy gear, most likely by just farming an easy area?

I have no problem doing higher level areas.. with the current state of maps tho I do not have consistent access to them as do many other solo players. Chris and team have said many times that maps are not supposed to be the only way to level..

I completely agree. Maps should be about items rather than mandatory for experience. There are many changes being discussed.

I am very happy with the Map system (especially the difficulty to get and stay at high Maps), but I certainly feel that we need to find a solution for high-level experience gain. Maps are intended to be about high-level item acquisition instead. This is something we're working on, but changes to it may not be done in time for the first 0.11.0 release.

Only problem with this... these were posted way back in May and here it is 4 months later and nothing else has even been teased other than... we are not happy with current end game leveling.

[Edit---We did get a zone level rebalance.. moving the problem up 5 levels...]
