[OSX] Unofficial Path of Exile port - 30/12/2018 status update

I have a problem. Just downloaded PoE and when i want to open its freeze on start screen and can't do anything..
First of all, ty very much for this port. Im on a new mac book and yosemite and the alpha version works fine, if only in full screen. Still, i also get the command tab white screen. The same happens when i try to change programs through exposer. While i would't mind the initial long loading time, the fact that i have to have the full screen game in front and can't access anything else on my comp is unfortunately a game breaker. You think this issue can be solved? I am not here to complain btw. I appreciate your work with this.

10.10.1, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB, 2,5 GHz i7

Dunno, V5 is based on Wine modification by Stefan Dosinger which is updated sporadically, there is a new version. Last version was released 20 days ago with bumped base wine version and one additional patch. I am awfully short on time, but I will make a new version (hopefully sometime next week, however my macbook GPU broke again, so I will be not able to test it properly).

Also the version numbering will change depending on wine version (currently, there are 3 different wines I can use - Vanilla/Original, Crossover wine (CX) and the Stefan one (D3D).

So in the best case scenario. next week there will be 3 new versions available, each one based on different wine version.

Holy shit... it actually worked after like 10 minutes of loading...

which would be great if it didn't destroy my computer for some reason....

The screen was flickering constantly and you could always see the login screen "branded" into the back of the game. So i thought, ehh, just reset the game, it'll be fine.

Well yeah, i can now always see the login screen in the back of my desktop, even when Path of Exile is closed, and the screen is constantly flickering. i tried reseting, reseting PRAM... im not sure what to do now... didn't expect this kind of repercussions when installing the port...

ok so a couple of hours later the flickering gradually died down, everything is back to normal again. no f**king idea what that was, but i won't dare to open PoE again... pity, i was looking forward to it!

I've been using this for a few days now. When I load it is ALWAYS flickering. If I change the resolution, or I think turn on/off Vsync? I should take notes. Anyway, if I change the resolution, the problem goes away instantly. Then I just hit 'revert' and the problem does not come back until I start the program again. If you dare chance it, maybe this will solve your problem?

I have not experienced any of the effects you describe, possibly because I have a different problem, possibly because the first thing I tried the first time I saw the flickering was to switch the resolution (turns out I'd set it wrong in the .ini file anyway.) Subsequently, I have always done so (or tweaked other video options to see which of them solve the problem. I think anything which give you the 'revert' dialogue does it) immediately.
Here are my other observations. I didn't dig very deep into the comments to see if these have been addressed or not.

1st. I'm using a 2010 iMac, running Yosemite (10.10.1)

* Most important observation: I can play PoE again! Thank you!
Spoiler
Not only is port functional and stable with only one tweak of the .ini file as per directions in the OP, but it is more stable and functional than the game was when I played in the past, on a PC.

* Screen flickers upon load. Solved by changing resolution. Works even if I 'revert'.

* Missing terrain tiles in Lower Submerged Cavern
Spoiler
in a1n, a1c. I haven't gotten to a1m, yet, but I speculate I'll see the problem there as well. Also some other objects (my avatar's weapon, I think) turn into flat squares of solid color of approximately the size of the missing terrain tiles. Most missing tiles appear when I am close to them. I haven't played with rendering options yet to try to fix this, because it only occurs in one area. (terrain tiles appear as solid black and flat squares.)

* Game freezes solid at the very worst times.
Spoiler
Generally whenever several new mobs appear, e.g. during ambushes, or a new Boss appears. The game is unresponsive for several seconds and often I am dead when I regain control. This has happened less often since I started using Smoke Mine, so the game may still be collecting some input? Sometimes I'm in a different position when the game resumes, especially if I managed to detonate the smoke mine. 8+ months ago, when I was playing the game on a friend's older PC (specs not available.), freezes were more frequent, but much less predictable.

* Massive Desync when near Sunburst Queen.
Spoiler
Or when discussing or thinking about Sunburst Queen. I kid. This problem was also found on the PC I used last year, and it was on many of the visually spammy bosses. It's been 8 months, they might have improved the game a lot, but I think this is just the same problem and my iMac is actually doing a much better job of this. Spammy/Spawny bosses are prone to causing desync, but less on Mac than on the PC I was using. Go unofficial Mac port!

* Chrome does not appear sometimes when Alt-tabbing out of the game. Solved by tabbing in and out again.

* Very slow area loads and very slow loading screen.
Spoiler
I see this has been well-documented and explored already, but I include it as a data point. This was also a problem on the PC, but I suspect it may be more pronounced on the Mac. Or the wait times have shrunk in memory. Doesn't appear to be a problem with the port so much as with the game.

* Game remains annoyingly difficult.
Spoiler
This is a feature, apparently, not a bug, and may also be a PEBCAK situation, I.e. I suck at PoE.
Spoiler
PEBCAK: Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard -- I only learned this one recently. So much for my geek cred.

LastRunWine.log is apparently much too long to paste into a spoiler.

Thank you for making this awesome port. I wish I'd known about it 6 months ago. I hope my observations are useful. The freeze problem means my current configuration may not be suitable for hardcore, but if I played hardcore on the PC with the same problem only more random, I probably can manage it, once I learn how. Overall, this is far more stable, playing with higher-spec settings than when I played on a PC. I think maybe the PC was older than I realized? In any case, game runs smoother, is more stable, and much prettier (err... uglier, really.) now.

All these errors occur with all graphic settings at default (except resolution) and in fullscreen mode. I have not tried playing in a window yet, nor have I tried turning stuff down to reduce errors (except shadow quality, I now remember.) I'll make an effort to track my troubleshooting and results.
First, I will say thanks to the OP for providing this service to the community. However, I have a few concerns that I haven't seen answered.

- How can we be sure that this isn't a clever way to steal passwords?
- Would this be considered modifying the game client? (EULA violation that GGG could rightfully ban people for)

If these were already answered, sorry this is a very long thread.

It's GGG approved/trusted.
It's GGG approved/trusted. (Plus, this doesn't modify the game at all, it doesn't even touch the game actually, it's merely the system that runs the game)

Actually pretty solid questions, I wonder why no one asked them yet.

- How can we be sure that this isn't a clever way to steal passwords?

This would require a lot more effort than its worth it. To actually steal password you would need to include keylogger (well, that would be the easy part), but the safety measure by GGG - logging from unknown computer/IP sends an email with verification code which I guess (and hope) is associated with that IP and login attempt, so even if you somehow get the code, it will not work on another device

- Would this be considered modifying the game client? (EULA violation that GGG could rightfully ban people for)

No. The game client is not modified in any way. You are running Windows application inside of OSX. Of course by normal means you cannot launch windows apps in OSX, so I am using Wine (winehq.org) and its flavors (codeweavers.org - crossover and Stefan Dosinger modified wine - used in V5) to actually run it. WINE (stands for Wine Is Not Emulator) translates Windows program calls so the Linux and OSX can understand it. This of course is not efficient method as running native client, but we don't have a one. Additionally translation is not 100% (because of bugs on either windows or wine side (seriously, windows have some buggy calls, and you need to make them buggy same way during translation which is not easy (they are not documented) and some Devs are taking advantage of those windows bugs in their apps which makes things even harder or they use wrong approach altogether)) and this is the reason why there are issues with graphics, performance and stability.
However because of this "translation/emulation" the game might think you are cheating and therefore the usage of the wrapper and wine is on your own risk. Few years ago there was an incident when Blizzard banned lot of Linux World of Warcraft players using wine, because the server thought they were cheating (and they weren't). Simply due to some bug in Wine server received wrong data and flagged them as cheaters. After some days, they were unbanned, and AFAIK this has never repeated and also I am not aware of any similar incident in different online game.

This wrapper I provide is just simplifying the whole process of installing and configuring wine into one file. If you don't believe the source, you can always make your own installation (configure and compile wine, install poe, install directx, openal and some additional libraries, add overrides for some dlls to use native windows ones instead of the ones supplied with wine and so) or use any other program to achieve same thing (Crossover, PlayOnMac, Wineskin)

Bootcamp!
Well after a few months of dealing with freezing/crashes, crazy long load times and wine issues, I installed Bootcamp. For starters, it took me 8 hours to get everything working, but PoE runs perfectly through bootcamp and windows 7.

Thanks Julus for the hard work making a partially playable Mac port.

Great news! Ready to test your new versions.

What wine was 4.2.1 based on?
