Anyone else feel that ranger still not good enough for melee build?
" Yeah I really like the theme of the ranger, how its thought out and how the surrounding tree in theory supports that. It looks like a decent racing/levelling position now, theres a lot of good stuff around there and its in keeping with who the ranger is. The problem I was talking about is definitely something that stems a lot from gems. I think bows need a phys damage support, for sure, and rangers/duelists need wed from quests so they have the option. Cleave, its one of those things where they could change it to 'fix' the issue. However I think builds have been designed and theory crafting done to optimise it with the current mechanics, I think they should just add another skill that has similar aoe style but scaling completely from phys. I would also bring some more wed and regen to the right side of the tree though cause every class needs that stuff and you just weight the left too much by having too many essentials over there. I know people will freak out at the word 'supposed', omg you can do anything durrrr!!! but I know what you mean. The ranger is green, dex, speed, cold damage, dual wield, bow, 1 handers, evasion, life. Thats what they are specialised in by their place on the tree and I definitely agree that evasion phys dual wield should be every bit as viable as any other specialisation. I think it will take some time with the new mechanics before we know if thats the case or not survival wise, Im sure if its not GGG will continue to fiddle with it until its right. @wiggin :
I haven't though that way. Because the ranger character, her looks especially, makes me thing about a woman from the shallows of a city, more than a woman from the forest. " Jeanne d'Arc reviendra !! mouhahaha !! Standard : BratalUss

" im currently at 17k6 (5.95 aps without multistrike)with my 4 frenzy charge up and self buff (only using anger/wrath and grace aura).1 of my weapon is also pretty trash (265 dps) my other isnt that insane also but decent (314 dps) both pure phy dmg.i have no atk speed on glove, both my ring have next to no offence mods and my cleave is only on 5L.overall,with better gear+6L i will be at 20k dps+ without any % aura (so in grp its much much higther).i might try to use soul taker if i can put my hand on one and remouve my blood magic passive to use few % aura.probably going to use determination/purity and hatred, should boost my survavibility by ALOT and hatred give a nice dmg boost.overall,i should be able to reach 25k dps in the end and my survavility is already pretty damn good. the only ele dmg i have currently come from wrath/anger aura.my cleave is going to have added fire dmg as my 6L but currently,he is not using it.i took few offence nods that make a hudge difference for my dps but yes,im losing some survavibility for that but its not really a probleme so far.with granite up im at 88% dmg reduction (74% without using 5 endu charge) 5,4% life regen, hight life leech,31% block chance and using enfeeble as my main curse.my hp isnt really hight (big drawback of my build) 3k6 but i have a good amount of defence stats that make that amount of hp enought.i can facetank most boss without any problem.my build rely a lot on mobility also, using 4L flicker strike and 2L wirling blade(with faster atk).can avoid, mouve insanly fast and go from monster to monster with flicker.you might think with that amount of phy dmg,i must kill myself on reflect but,no,reflect isnt a problem at all.with my regen/leech and hight dmg reduction, reflect do next to nothing. i cant wait to try soul taker, should make my build ALOT stronger then it is. a 80% all res+hudge amount of dmg reduction when il use determination should help and having 20-25k+ dps is enought to melt everything in no time (even with my 17k6 its already pretty crazy). i tried few build but so far,its the one i enjoyed the most.the gameplay is really really fast and its really effective .i have been playing and twicking this build since end of CB and im really satisfied with the current result :) Last edited by zakariusqc#1505 on Jul 19, 2013, 2:46:40 PM

new ranger tree is great for dual wield weapon
new ranger tree is great for weapon and shield new ranger tree is NOT good for 2h weapons. if you look at marauder bottom branch, theres 1h on top, 2h on bottom, and just melee phys in middle. ranger has big nodes for 1h and shield the 'melee' nodes require going through these, which is silly. and inefficient. fix that and im 100%happy with new ranger tree. i mean i want also ranger to have staff nodes, dexterity block w staff actually makes sense for a nimble ranger forest hunter person. like a marauder is gonna use a staff when they can use a mace. maybe someday. |

" dude 314 dps of pure phys off a 1 hander is an absolutely insane sword no? I know how hard it is to roll a proper phys sword as you need that %, the # , a hybrid and attack speed, its so specific. I guess now the leagues have gone on so long theres a lot more of them around. My first phys cleave duelist at the start of OB found so many op ele swords that were pushed aside, dozzens, and never got a 314 dps phys sword. To this day I dont think Ive ever found one. Gratz on the character man, it sounds like a serious build. You def want added fire on that puppy with so much phys flying around, and its not going to bite you on phys reflect which is nice. I specced out a new melee ranger yesterday with a lvl78 just to see whats up, crit dagger build as I had a couple of daggers lying around and Ive never used em. Is it as optimum as a shadow doing this? I dunno, I didnt have a shadow to respec by my guess is probably not in fairness. But its definitely viable, theres no question the ranger is a viable melee start (as far as melee is viable generally). Its like 20kdps trashing mobs as fast as my ele cleaver no problem. However, 3k life, not 4k, and 3.5% life regen rather than 5.4%, making it considerably more fragile. That bit makes me question why the marauder and templar need so much more life and life regen considering they are armour/endurance based and are reducing a lot of damage where as Im mostly evasion based and need a massive health pool to deal with spike damage. I also specced over twice the damage my cleaver specced, maybe 3x as many points even. So theres still some question marks over it comparatively. " crit dagger can have insane dps but what i hate is....crit is IMO,the worste thing for melee.crit again reflect mobs or reflect map with that kind of dps will just 1 shot you.before using RT, i had lot of trouble with reflect even when i had really really low dps but now with RT,not a probleme anymore.crit build is good if you want insane dps but you wont be able to handle reflect map and for mobs, might need another skill to take them down (like viper strike, bear trap) that wont 1 shot you. for dagger the best is probably shadow.all the good nods for dagger are near shadow and if you start as a ranger, you will need to go on the right side of the tree for them and me im going left side lol.you could still only grab 1hand or dual weild nods but they have less nods for crit.im not sure how many %crit nods you need since i never made crit build but it could be enought mabey.im pretty sure there a way to make it work. I respec by bow ranger to a dual claw ranger.

It's working out quite nicely. In terms of survivability it is equivalent to my max block/evasion dualist. I love what they did with evasion, I'm currently at 51% and with Ondar's guile my evasion against projectile max out at 95%. |

" oh for sure, life based evasion hybrid crit dagger ranger, its not quite a ci eb lightning warp duelist but on the scale of bad ideas its pretty up there. It wasnt really designed to be a serious endgame build, for pretty much the reason you say, left side, health? go left. So any serious build, I might as well just level a new duelist/marauder, theyre quick with unique 2 handers you can level in no time. I wanted to try something Ive never done and yes on all scores really, evasion, crit melee, not going left, not being able to use a proper aoe only melee splash, reflect damage, theyre all as awfully brutal on the player as I expected them to be. Viable, but immensely needy and fragile compared to a hard push to the left building like a marauder/duelist/templar armoured melee. Reflect is even worse than I had anticipated actually. My fear was I would 1 shot myself if I hit a trash mob under the aura of an allies reflect phys rare. That is true, but its worse than that, Im taking 1 shot myself levels of reflect damage off things I didnt even think were effected by that aura, like the monster itself who has the aura. I posted about it in the bug section. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
