The Debate Over Experience Point Loss
" First, if I came off too aggressive, I apologize. But you need to understand—Omen isn’t a cure-all. Try listening to what people are saying. No matter how many times it’s explained, you often tell those with different opinions that if they can’t find answers within the "perfect" system of the game, they should just quit. Yes, I said it: removing the experience penalty entirely is a bad idea. now we’ve found common ground—and that’s great. Let’s start from here. Just as we both dislike removing the penalty entirely, the fact that there’s no intention to adjust the harshness of losing 10% XP is also a problem. I played Diablo 20 years ago and now enjoy POE. I’m sure many others do too. But that’s 20 years ago, my friend. Back then, it was hard to find information in video format. Most guides were written on websites. I’m Korean, so I can’t speak for the North American scene, but I imagine it also took more time back then to find what you needed. Now? Even Facebook is considered outdated. TikTok rules the world, and getting info from YouTube is a given. A system that hasn't changed in 20 years naturally causes stress in today’s fast-paced world. The people who’ve always played that way are just used to it, and that’s why they don’t see the issue. The world has adapted to speed. That’s why I hope POE—an amazing game—can keep its strengths while refreshing the outdated and frustrating parts. Adjusting the experience penalty is just a starting point. And oh, if I bring up the next topic, I already feel a headache coming on from the inevitable backlash. lol. Still, even if the penalty is eased and some players reach level 100 more easily, they won’t say, “Well, I’m done with this game forever.” On the contrary, knowing level 100 is achievable without crushing stress might inspire people to level a second character. Like I said in my post, dragging out game time just for the sake of retention is outdated thinking. If the game is fun, people will return—even if they leave early. With POE2 in the mix, the rotation will be even faster. My point is this: Create a game people want to come back to, even if they leave for a while. POE is one of those games. It’s always calling you back. You don’t need 20-year-old systems to force long playtime—POE already has plenty of irresistible content. I just want more people to enjoy that fun together. Even newcomers could try a second build during the league if a bit of stress was reduced. That would actually increase playtime. As I said before, POE is a complex and difficult game because the content accumulated over time is organically interwoven. That’s part of what makes it fun—and it’s the essence of its identity. What I’m trying to say is: Yes, it’s hard and complex—but still fun. But inconvenience? That’s never fun. Twenty years ago, we didn’t have smartphones. Now everyone does. That’s the difference. POE isn’t even 20 years old, yet it’s stuck in the mindset of what was considered the peak of gaming two decades ago. That’s outdated, and now it’s just inconvenient. We share the same opinion—not that the penalty should vanish, but that it should be adjusted to fit modern standards. Does my explanation make sense now? The death penalty has been adjusted for pinnacle content. You can always prioritize leveling to 100 via numerous atlas strats and there are also points on the tree to take to reduce enemy damage. There are plenty of ways around the barrier.

The point is that its an outdated mechanic, the year isn't 2000 anymore and its time for this game to move on. Actual good games don't have pointlessly time-wasting mechanics like exp loss. Its inherently anti-fun and anti-player. All it does is make you not wanna play more of the game, and that's simply bad game design.

Give an inch, want a mile. Remove xp loss on bosses, still get people complaining. I think in t17s and ubers all characters should go to the void when they die.
Other xp losses are fine. |

" Just checked after I read this reply. Amel omens are 385c or 1.86d on the exchange. I'm not stressed, I just think it's an out-dated, archaic, garbage mechanic best left in the 90's where it originated. At least with games like Dark Souls, when I lose my XP, its because I fucked up twice, not because the game decided to randomly roll a monster that's a direct hard counter to my build. But in POE when I am steamrolling content for hours then just randomly fall over with no idea why it's quite maddening, because it's bullshit designed to slow your progress, to keep you chasing that carrot. " I think when you die you should not only lose 10% of your XP but one of your skill gems should randomly POOF like they do when the locus backfires on you. And if more than one gem in any piece of gear gets poof that piece of gear should have all its mod re-rolled randomly. I mean there's ways around dying, right? So why not make it as punishing as possible? Last edited by yummysushipjs#7638 on Jul 31, 2025, 2:50:28 AM

" Why do you keep giving the same answer no matter how much I explain? “There are many ways in the game, so go figure them out.” Is that all you have to say? Are you really that proud of having mastered this game? So people who haven’t mastered the game aren’t allowed to have opinions about it? I’ve said it multiple times already! I’m not asking for the experience penalty to be removed entirely—just adjusted to better reflect reality! Is it really that hard to understand what I’m saying? How long are you going to stay stuck in the 20th century? You so-called game masters—maybe it’s time you stop playing and take a look at how the world is changing. Stop telling people to go study pigeon breeding. Everyone uses smartphones now. We live in a world where autonomous driving is becoming a reality, yet you’re still flipping through map books, saying “Take a left on Route X, drive a few hundred miles, then turn right at the first gas station.” That’s what you’re doing! Why do you want to keep this fun and amazing game as your own exclusive domain? What do you gain by pushing people away? Why is it that when someone shows interest in the game, all you say is “Go study the game if you don’t know it”? That’s all you ever say. Again, I’m not asking for the penalty to be removed entirely. I’m saying it needs a slight adjustment. If, as you claim, everything is already perfectly prepared in this game and any complaints are just due to ignorance, then why do patches and updates exist? If it’s perfect, what’s being fixed? When they added a feature that lets you automatically stash currency items into the correct tab, look at the YouTube comments. “Welcome to the 21st century”—those comments were everywhere. I know. I get it. It’s a well-made and fun game. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have outdated parts. You just don’t notice them because you’re used to the system. Stop ignoring the perspectives of new players who are just getting into the game. Do you really want this game to become a self-congratulatory tool for a few people to flaunt their supposed intellectual superiority? Every game benefits from a growing player base, and this one is no exception. And whether suggestions are accepted or not is up to the developers. So who are you, as just another player, to reject opinions outright and parrot “Go study the game!”? There are tons of streamers who share information, introduce builds, and teach how to earn currency. Do you think new players won’t watch those? Do you really think you’re the only one who knows everything? The point is to modernize the outdated parts of the game—not to ruin it! I’ve said it over and over! It’s fun because it’s hard and complex! But! It’s not fun when it’s inconvenient! Is it really so hard to understand that I’m just asking for those inconvenient parts to be adjusted? POE is a complex and difficult game because its accumulated content is interconnected and organically combined. That’s why it’s diverse, and that’s why it’s a fun and well-made game. I know! I get it! Just please keep the fun and update the outdated parts! Stop preaching pigeon breeding in a world where smartphones are the norm. If you still don’t understand what I’m saying after all this, like I said—just stop caring and go play your game. If you really want to act like gatekeepers for the devs, go ahead and apply for a job at GGG. How many times do I have to say it—Is the 10% penalty some sacred, untouchable number? Will the game really collapse if it’s adjusted? | |

" You really haven’t experienced what true sarcasm feels like, have you? For someone who acts so grand and all-knowing, why is your go-to response always “go study the game”? If you know so much, why not become a POE info-streamer? Oh wait—maybe you’re afraid that if you actually spoke live, people who know more than you would tear you apart. That’s why you’re stuck playing gatekeeper on an official forum that barely anyone reads. Do you think I’m posting this for you to hear? I’m trying to speak to GGG, not to self-proclaimed experts like you who pretend to represent the devs and shut down everyone else’s opinion. If being good at POE is the greatest achievement of your life, then go play SSF Ruthless and hit level 100. Then report it to a news station! “Wow! Look at me! I hit level 100 in POE SSF Ruthless! No one knows POE better than I do! Everyone should play POE exactly how I say!” Go ahead and do an interview like that, okay? “There’s no penalty if you don’t die in the game. Omen is the cure-all. If you don’t want to die, study the game! What, you didn’t know that? You must be a clueless newbie.” Is that supposed to be a helpful response and not sarcasm? Did I ever say everything should be nerfed? I’ve repeated myself multiple times, and if you actually knew how to read, you’d see that I also said completely removing the XP penalty is a bad idea. Did my post really sound like I was calling for a full nerf? You claim to know this game so well—how could you possibly misinterpret it like that? Is suggesting a bit of adjustment to match the current era really so offensive that it makes you lose your mind? Let me say it again since you clearly didn’t get it: Is the 10% XP penalty some sacred, untouchable law? Do you really think tweaking it slightly will destroy the game? |
