Very annoying aspect of the monsters A.I.

if you portal back to town and the portal times out, all you have to do is take the nearest waypoint to where you were.

Some maps do not have a waypoint. The nearest waypoint may be a while away. It would be less of an issue, if the waypoints were more evenly laid out. It's not the case at the moment.

But how do you know for sure?

My guess is that portals don't stay open for long because of the additional server resources used per instance.

Well, if that's the case, then why not add a microtransaction portal gem which opens portals of a different color (let's say green) that stay open indefinitely, but only one such portal at a time? The price of the item could cover the extra server resources used.

My issue here is that this is not actually consistent.

See once I ported out of a dungeon (don't remember the exact one), and I spent a while in town Act 2 with the vendor and my storage.

Then I want to go back in and the portal has disappeared.

At this point then we are led to believe that the server has freed resources.

But... since I have no choice now, I run to the north-east area just out of town, and to my surprise the bodies were still laid on the floor along with random loot I didn't pickup. The server had maintained storage for that map even though I had moved on already and the portal I made was somewhere else.

That sounds very strange, almost like a bug. I thought portals only closed when the instance was unloaded from the server.
The ability to keep track of all the instances you have open would be great.

As others have said, if you simply cannot afk in a safe location - portal out/quit the game. It's worth it to lose a little progress and grind back to where you were - which could get you some nice drops/xp anyway - than it is to risk dying in HC.

I like the way monsters currently roam and to make them less mobile would hurt the game's difficulty and aesthetic.

Yeah, I remember the first time this happened to me, I brought up the options screen thinking this would pause the game, went to the john, got a drink , came back and I was toast.. I was WTF? Then laughed at myself when I remembered that this was an online game.

I do however wish there was some sort of pause at least in single player mode
.....And that's all I have to say about that.
I haven't run into this problem myself. In general, I find that enemies don't home in on you enough. They aren't nearly aggressive enough.

Yup.. would be nice to have some thing for when you're playing by yourself in an instance.. or possibly a way to "Freeze" an instance.. so the party can take a rest.. no one can move, including the players, but can still chat.
I should have just focused on the lack of a portal that last for as long as you're logged in.

You can "pause" simply by going to town.

That's side stepping the issue.

If not now, the devs will be swamped by portal complaints when this goes public anyway.

No, I am guessing that the dungeon which I "portaled" out of, was indeed flushed. However then when I walked out of town (I had not discovered a useful waypoint and no more portal), then I found that the zone right outside town, and outdorr zone, was still maintained.

eg.

town > zone 1 > dungeon

Server flushed dungeon + portal, but zone1 was remembered.

Zones stay active for 15minutes after you were last in them....Portals in town do not last this long.

I will constantly toss a portal up when I enter a zone I expect to die in. It will stay active the whole time...but if I goto town, it will disappear before the zone does.

I can also keep 2 zones active by constantly running through them. Man, I hate when I forget to drop a portal.

Mayhaps someone should take a Stop watch and open a portal, goto town and time it.

Do two different test...

1) Stand there, AFK.
2) Move around the whole time.

I venture to speculate the portal times will be different.
