Customized Renaming of Weapons & Armor

I applaud the opportunity & resulting product the diamond supporters have created with their customized uniques & cannot wait to collect them. Recent posts by the Diamonds sparked an idea. What I would LOVE to see is the ability for certain user crafted weapons & armor be renamed.

The idea solidified from crafting an endgame sword custom to my needs. Rolling it was a long process & required considerable resources to create. I have yet to see a 1h sword with higher dmg values (244) personally, however Im sure there are better. I retired the chr using it & no longer use swords. It now just looks pretty in my inventory, inert, collecting dust.

Selling it would be like throwing another nameless item into a pile, its story forgotten. To me it belongs to a museum. A custom name would mark it as something special, an elite item deserving recognition. Over time, our own items would become known, traded & remembered.

To be able to give it a personalized name would further solidify my chr's identity. Marking deserving items would additionally satisfy other lore-related threads I have woven over multiple rpgs. This would strengthen my connection/dedication to the game & all my characters.

I wont pretend to know the functionality or mechanics of items. I dont even know if this is possible. If personalized item names is a possibility, I would love to hear thoughts & suggestions from others.

**Possible Methods**
-An orb. A really expensive orb to ensure a flood of stupid or inappropriate names do not become commonplace. Once used & renamed it cannot be altered.

-A cash shop item/functionality. This would certainly limit frivolous naming. I've payed $10 in other MMOS for much much less.

-A different class of items altogether with a specific color to identify it as user named & created.

Hopefully there are others who find customized item naming as appealing as I do. Please post your thoughts, good & bad.

Thanks for reading :)

I personally wouldn't spent my orbs on a item that writes your name on a item which could be sold or dropped.
I'm sure there are people who would buy it at the cash shop but i wouldn't, i'd rather pick stash space or extra gore.
The last method interests me though, the thought of an item that would turn into a "unique" with your name on it and perhaps even a little personal written text would be pretty cool the names should be generic though like "<your name>'s champion chopper" or "<your name>'s bully basher" and the items should be around the same as a rare item in damage and mods.

I like it, Items which are very rare and powerful should have an option of naming them.

It would give the game more mystery and would enhance the gameplay

In another game which involved elderly parchment you could craft your weapons & armor. The simple option of giving the sword a title, a name after imbuing it with magical properties gave it an identity. Over time these items would take on characteristics befitting of the title. Content is what you make of it & I thoroughly enjoyed including my own lore into the game.

I don't necessarily even want a character's name attached to the item in PoE. Certain items I use were crafted & handed down by longtime players. Imagine items renown for being special bartered & talked about while keeping the memory of the original crafter alive. Your favorite bow or endgame wand would eventually have a lineage of users.

Omg, I was just thinking about creating an "Alice" character, and I wished there was a way to rename my knife to "Vorpal Blade".

I would totally get this, if it was a shop item. :)
Very nice OP, and I totally concur. Making such a fantastic weapon is a small, personal triumph, and I think a Cash-Shop option to rename (at least)rare equipment would be a great idea. Imagine linking your own, personal "set" items in the forums for other folks to see.

Yeah, I'm in. =^[.]^=

Why not, moar $$$ for GGG. That said for cash shop items I imagine there is a threshold where the desirability of such a thing has to make the development time worth it.

Wouldn't the item actually lose resell value when it is named?

Your suggestion is in line with a kind of trophy room as they had in Guild Wars - Eye of the North expansion, where you can display armor sets, companions, banners and such.
I could see a cash shop item with this and with some clever coding and approval from devs make the item permanent in the world. If sold/dropped/deleted, it would pop up as a random drop somewhere.
