2h melee needs to be revisited...

Pretty much, people were saying melee is functional before because you didn't need all this damage that you do today. And impale was a one point wonder, and seismic cry was broken, and crutch 3, crutch 4, crutch 5 :)
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Non-Cyclone melee is just awful all around right now.

I tried desperately to build melee this league (shield crush). I have insane defenses (93% spell suppression, 100% ele avoidance, 80% evade attacks, 70% phys dam reduction, 30% chance to block) and because I dont have the clearing ability of, well, any other meta category of skill, I die all the damn time.

So, re-rolling skellie mages like everyone else...

Hate to break it to you but your defenses aren't nearly as insane as you think. You have very little base armour on your pieces (especially your chest piece) so I'm guessing you're going by the in-game tooltip that tells you you have 70% phys reduction. 93% spell suppression simply means there's a 7% chance you do take full damage, which is a fairly high number if you are in close range with how many hits coming your way.

Not defending melee as it does need help.

problem is.. ive been farming endgame (4scarab influenced rare 16+ + endgame bosses) with a discharge character that has 4900 HP, elementalist shield + golems and.. 3 semi-casual-perma flasks

ive died TWICE in 3 days. and one case was to bleeding i 'dared' to wait out. oh well.

Spoiler

as you can see: it is a IDGAF gearing yet the damage is 'enough' and defences.. are not needed.

you cannot die when everything you see on the screen is already burning crisp. melee on the other hand..

it is all about the damage. there is a threshold a character has to meet. most melee builds have to sacrifice defences to get there.
I'm not saying melee isn't crap. I'm just saying his build isn't nearly as tanky as he thinks.
No. POB.

Sorry it says 80%. I was guesstimating.

Regardless of whether or not the word "insane" is warranted. These are good, well rounded defenses, and I die way too much because of how crappy melee is in general.

How much enemy hit damage are you setting in config? Because if you left that default, that's basically in-game tooltip.
I edited my comment above to include POB of character so you can review. But again, regardless of whether or not I used the appropriate adjective to describe the level of my tankiness, these are good, solid investment defenses.
The only thing else I think I could do is sacrifice Blood and Sand for Defiance Banner.
I want to make it very clear that I'm not here to attack your character or the fact that melee needs to be improved a lot.

At the same time, I'm only pointing certain things out because I feel that expectations are wrong on certain things.

With those out of the way, your defenses are roughly where I expected them to be based on the gear you have. The evasion level you have is actually pretty decent for sure (close range really wants much more if going heavy evasion, upper 80s at least). But 6k armour w/o pots (with melee's clear, you won't have 100% pot uptime on a raider; with how many hits generally come in for melee, they will catch you in the gaps) and 13k with is practically nothing. That amount is not nearly as good as you think and is quite frankly not very different from having no armour at all in actual play. And for good reason--you have ~1100 base armour on your gear in total.

If you get pieces with actual good armour/evasion totals, this character WILL feel dramatically tankier to play. So if you really like this playstyle, I don't think you should give up. My current character has 70% migitation at an enemy hit of 5k (which is the low end of what I set in pob to judge my true tankiness). I have barely more than 4k life and am often in close range with how I play. But I do feel really tanky. Why? Because I have a 10k molten shell and almost 60k armour (with my pots up, but I'm also PF so they are up 100% of the time). My pieces aren't super optimized defense-wise either so I can get significantly more.

Roll skelly mages if you like. But if you really enjoyed that Shield Crush, don't give up on it. You just need much stronger defenses than what you have.
