Pay to Win vs Not: Irrelevant Distinction

Hi,

These threads aren't particularly relevant, because they represent an argument over semantics. For example, we could characterize the issue as binary, pay to win or not, all one way or the other. Or we could characterize the issue in tiers, like this:

1. Pay for essentials
2. Pay for conveniences
3. Pay for accessories

Paying for essentials, like armor, spells, or other in game advantages meant to directly overcome content is what they are against. They are not against #2 and #3, and never have been. As far as paying for conveniences, any such argument could always be taken as one that gives a player an advantage relative to their time investment. And you could therefore always make an argument that this is a very indirect "pay to win" case. But this is neither here nor there. POE is pay-for-convenience, and pay-for-accessories, which is to say: that is how are monetizing this gaming business.

We, the community, should all be acutely aware that design time, developer time, test time, office space, healthcare, server infrastructure, payroll processing, and all the associated thisses and that's are absolutely not free. You know what else is even less free than all of that? Cash granted by a VC or other party in order to develop a future ROI. All of those particular roads lead to a rome in which POE acquires revenues.

And they have chosen their revenue model. This particular rabbit is not going back into any set of hats. The deal is sealed. The day is done. And so on and so forth.

Pay for convenience and pay for accessories is what we have. Hopefully they will make money at it, which means we all get to keep playing. I hope we all want that, right?

So relax, stop bickering, and enjoy the game.

Sheesh. And stuff.

now is responding to this thread ok? I am scared... don't want to be put on probation!!!!

now on topic:

I enjoy the game, I like it and its been very good so far... I don't even deal with desync as most of you which is good...

But the devs made ONE BALLSY statement being 100% against pay to win... I would agree on everything accept offering ANYTHING USEFUL for money, no matter how small or how lil convince it provides... it breaks the 100%...

You know David Lynch would have to direct.
All the things I want to remember are in the places I'd like to forget.
Hi, AintCare.

Howarya?

I think ultimately it's not a matter of "balsy" or not. It's just a matter of accepting how it is that they look at things. They are not tossing out a challenge for others to overcome or fight with; they are deciding on a business model, and looking to describe it the best they know how. Ultimately, they are against mode 1, but not 2 and 3. Which words do you want them to put to it? See what I mean?

Have you ever played a free game that sells stuff to help you actually win the game directly? Well I have. And that is what they are against.

The reason that they are favor of pay for convenience is that it is a good motivator to spend money. For example, all of my bronze points and most of the rest of my purchases have gone into premium stash tabs. They are super useful, and incented me into buying stuff from them. And I'm sure they are happy with that, you know?

Getting trapped up over terms isn't going to help.

That is all.
