Runes(D3) VS Support Gems(PoE), which one is deeper
Sadly, all this is reminding me of is the fact that I wouldn't have given two slightly rancid farts about skill combinations and permutations of the same skill with modifiers if not for a little math I saw regarding D3's original skill rune system. The words 'unique skill builds' and 'over a million for each class' were like a trigger in my brain -- suddenly I knew that skill modification *is* the future of ARPGs. It was something I'd encountered briefly with Sacred 2, but nothing like what D3 proposed. I was accustomed to gear being the key to build diversity, with me using the same skills as everyone else in strange and occasionally successful ways. But the idea of making skills themselves 'equippable' (beyond the base skill, that's what runes really were) was nothing short of genius. Skills as loot. Huh. And having other skills change other skills, like placing a lens in front of a light source? Or better still, a prism? Goodness. Suddenly the pure white of any one skill is a spectrum of possibility. Wow and wow.
...It is thus very ironic that my deeper appreciation of PoE's skill system is a direct result of my exposure to Diablo 3's, when the two were developed independently and now walk very different paths through the woods. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

" Economically speaking, actually, they'd be better off supporting as many builds as possible. Having 100 "high demand items" that sell for $20 each is better than having 10 "high demand items" that sell for $150 each. |

" They're a corporation. They'll try to get 100 $150 items if possible. Back in black

To be honest, neither is that great. Most of PoE's skills don't alter how a skill works and are just boring +damage supports. Diablo 3's vary greatly; some are just as dull as PoE's but others fundamentally change how a skill works. Its hard to say if one is a clear winner.

" Well, of course they'd like that best, but it'll never happen. If they have the choice of making ONE build the best (and limiting the most valuable items to that build), or making many builds good (resulting in lots of people trying new builds (buying gear), switching because they "prefer" one to another (buying gear), feeling the game has more variety and sticking around (to buy gear in the future), etc, then it's a no brainer. Also, IIRC, they only take a percentage cut from commodities. That'd mean that no matter how good items are, or how much they go for, they make $1 per item sold (or $1.25. Or .75. Or whatever it is.) |

Even if they make $0.1 per sale... no doubt they'll make tens of thousands of sales per day if not more.
Given that they will make more than ten cents per sale.... they are going to make millions of dollars per year by simply taxing trades. If you have account problems please Email Support

" To hell with millions! They'll probably be making hundreds of millions or billions if they play their cards right. Back in black

" Well, that depends on the volume of sales that go on the RMAH. There is, after all, an alternative - Several even. But regardless, you're quite possibly right. And to that I say: Doesn't really bother me. They're providing a service. It's your right to avoid that service - There will still be people trading, or using the GAH, so it's not like you'll be incapable of ever getting good gear (not to mention that it's as likely to drop for you as anyone else...) It's their right to charge for it. I don't get mad at Facebook or eBay or Youtube or Palpal for the ways they make money. |

" It still wasn't possible though. :P Unless they just made the game for you and disregarded the other 99,9999 percent of the playerbase.
