Runes(D3) VS Support Gems(PoE), which one is deeper

Discuss this.
no, i refuse.
Okay I will bite.

"Which one is deeper" doesn't matter. Which one accomplishes its objective, is a better question.

PoE Support Gems

I like the concept of Support Gems and the ability to alter a skill any way I want. This is one of PoE's shining highlights over other games.

However, I don't like how it was implemented in the form of items. I dislike having to keep track of all my gems in my stash. They take up a lot of space, and its just...too much. This is largely personal taste, however.

Depending on how well the passive tree is balanced, skill gems and their supports could lead to cookie-cutter builds.

D3 Runes

I'm glad that Blizzard scrapped the itemization of runes, for the same reasons I said above.

Many of the runes are very lackluster. For example, the Demon Hunter's Puncturing Arrow rune (the first rune you get) merely increases the chance for Hungering Arrow to pierce its target by 15%. Really? Could you get any more boring than that?

The concept is cool, but I feel that there was little thought put into most of the runes themselves.

Overall, I dislike Path of Exile's itemization of support gems. In that regard, Diablo 3 steps ahead. However, D3's runes are too boring and lack the customization that PoE offers in support gems.

The "runes" in D3 are simply additional skill features. These are no runes - there is no possibility to find them in the game.

D3 runes =/= D2 runes.

Stop thinking of the word "rune" being defined only by Diablo 2's interpretation.
“God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I will never die.”
After playing D3 beta now I find both systems pretty bad.

I like PoE supports better in the way they can be connected to any skill but like D3 many of them just give a boring small number advantage.

But D3 has some runes that give a real different feel to the skill. PoE I think has less of these currently.

Well, you can customize this more in PoE, but as about me poster said, some of d3 runes really change the skills and how they function, the things that PoE doesnt have that much, but I hope will come, like trap suport gems.
i will tell you since you cant figure it out, PoE is deeper.
Phase 1: Make D3

Phase 2: ?

Phase 3: Profit

Derp.
I like D3's system the most personally.
It's only 'problem' to me is that not all skills have equal rune variety (although this will most likely be the same for POE). Skills like demon hunter's puncturing arrow have very little variation through runes, while with doctor's fire bats skill undergoes dramatic changes in both appearance and playstyle depending on which runes you choose.

The problem I have with POE's system is that they have to be put in gear.
It's a cool system, but it has it's 'issues'. For example, in diablo when you find a cool piece of gear you're like 'Nice, an upgrade!'.
In POE when you find a new piece with better stats I often find myself going 'Nice, an upgr-crap, it doesn't have the same sockets.' this, for me, really diminishes the awesome feeling of finding good loot.

Which one is the deepest?
That's a rather pointless discussion ruled primarily by bias on both sides.
''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters.
The silence is your answer.''
