I come from Guild Wars, and even though I think GW1 build making is superior to GW2... GW2 allows players to use skills while on the move and it improves the feeling of action in combat by 500%!
Just wish a game could have the best of both worlds.

Red Skill-Gem: Quake
Requires Mace
Smashes your Mace down into the ground, sending opponents within 4-7 range up in the air for 0.5-2 seconds.

Shield Charge and Whirling Blades will do extra damage on targets knocked in the air before they have landed.

Ground Slam will do extra damage on targets that have recently landed. (within 0.1-1 sec after landed)

Examples of Support Gems for Melee
Hitting an enemy with an Axe/Sword/Mace have a chance of x to Proc y doing z extra damage.
Increased Chance to Knockback
Increased Chance to Knockup/Knockdown
Chance to Dizzy the Target.
A successful Crit with weapon y using linked skill has x chance to generate an Endurance Charge
A successful Crit with weapon y using linked skill has x chance to generate a Frenzy Charge
Linked Skill has x chance to Proc a Lvl 5 Discharge when you do a critical hit.
When doing a Critical hit with Weapon x/Skill y, you get Buff z for 1-4 seconds duration.
Increased Armor-Penetration.
Increased Melee Range/Radius/Cone
Chance to do a lvl 5 Puncture when performing a Critical hit wielding Weapon y with Linked skill
A successful crit with linked skill using Weapon x Weakens the target for y.
Chance to 50 % damage to all enemies within 4-6 range of the Target. (Splinter/Shatter-effect)

First and foremost, i'd love to see more states/debuffs/status ailments and such but that will assumedly come at a later stage.

What i'd really love to see though, are some skills working together with other skills in different ways.

Some loose examples:

Infernal Blow doing more damage and Weakens a Punctured opponent.

Heavy Strike doing more damage and an improved chance to Shatter a Frozen opponent.

Flicker Strike doing more damage and having an improved chance to Crit on a Poisoned/Viper'd opponent.

Whirling Blades doing some extra damage and Slowing a Burning opponent.

Shield Charge having extra knockback (and an added chance to Stun) a Blinded opponent.

Glacial Hammer doing extra damage and having improved chance to Shatter a Feared/Fleeing opponent.

Double Strike doing extra damage and an improved chance to Crit on Burning opponents.

Even more ideas and suggestions:

Support Gem 1
Reduces Targets Damage Output with x for 1.5-2 seconds. (Need to be refreshed due to short duration)

Support Gem 2
Hitting a Target with Linked Skill (Only Single-Target Melee Attacks) will raise the Casters Armor and Evasion with 10 % for 1.5-2 seconds. (Need to be refreshed due to short duration)

Support Gem 3
Hitting a Target with Linked Skill (Only Single-Target Melee Attacks) will Reduce Damage Taken by Caster with x for 1.5-2 seconds. (Need to be refreshed due to short duration)

Armor/Absorb Totem
Reduces/Absorbs 100 damage that a Player takes within Totem-Area until Totem is destroyed.

(Totem has 500 HP total and longer cooldown than normal totems)


Shield Totem
Has a 20 % chance to Block any attack to Players within Totem-Range.

This Block-check is calculated and performed before the Players Evasion and the Players own Block.

Totem has short duration and longer cooldown than other Totems.

resistance totem

totem of the ancestor
calling upon an ancient spirit that fights for you

skills that have defensive nature like

shield block
drains mana for every physical attack received but absorbs X amount of flat damage ( depending on the primary defense stat number) also increase block rate by X amount only works vs opponents that are facing you mobs will quickly lose aggro. will not work with energy shield only shields.

Parry
similar as shield block but works for dual wielders/staff wielders has smaller abosbsion amount and increased block rating but is usable for said weapon set ups.

Support gem
Mystic block
50% of amount absorbed/blocked aplies to elemental and chaos damage. (works for both parry and shield block) every quality increases the % by 2%
every lvl decreases mana cost multiplier.
retaliate
every succesfull block/parry receives an immediate counter at 80% of your damage every quality lvl increases this with 1%
can only perform attacks at 50% of your regular atk speed every lvl increases this by 2.5%
revenge
depending on the charges active 1 magic attacker receives elemental damage wich cannot be reflected fire for endurance lighting for frenzy and ice for power charge the damage is very low but has a 100 % chance of inflicting an ailment.
every quality increase increases duration of this ailment
every lvl increases the initial elemental damage. only 1 charge of each is depleted for 1 attack.

(i know they are not all support gems but i feel something like this would be awesome to have)

One melee only support gem idea I saw a while back that was really damn cool was the golem support gem. Basically it would be like the magic totem and ranged totem supports, except for melee skills and it would a be a mobile golem instead of an immobile totem.

Basically the idea was similar to totems. You pay a mana cost for casting the spell, but it raises a totem that casts the spell. Except with this, you'd pay a partial mana cost for casting the spell, but preform a basic attack melee attack with a chance for the paired spell to go off at no further cost.

This gem + Fireball(Level 18) + Mana leech (level 20).

Level 18 fireball costs 30 mana and deals 248-372 damage.
Level 20 Mana leech is 4%.

When you click to "cast" this specific fireball, you would pay 10 mana, preform a basic attack, have a chance to cast the spell, and if it triggered, the fireball would deal ~164-246, and you would gain the 4% mana leech of the fireball's damage. You will not get the added support gems effects on the initial auto attacks. The basic attack damage should not be reduced by the damage effectiveness, only the spell and it's paired supports. You can only pair it will an actual spell, not with Skill-Attack.

The mana cost would be lower, you will be dealing less damage with the spell, and it will force you to actually use a basic attack.
