What happens at league's end?

I'm new to the game, but put a lot of time into two characters in the Challenge League so far. I just read that at the start of a new league, these characters go over to Standard? We have to start over? What about the reset? Can we use the points to make a new character in the new Challenge League, or are they gone? What about equipment in the Stash and on the characters? Does that transfer into the new league?

In sum:

Everything you own will be moved to Standard league.
This includes characters (with earned passive points) and items in inventory and stash (as remove-only tabs). In other words, you will not lose any character nor item/currency you gained. The migration may take some time so just take a break for a couple days, theorycraft your next league or something.

All challenge leagues start with a fresh economy and brand-new.
No items, no points, no characters, no map, no delve, nothing. The only exception are MTX (like purchased tabs), hideouts and master levels, which are account-wide.

Passive point reset is available at the start of the new league for existing characters, if there's sufficient change to the tree.

Thanks for the reply.

That's... really depressing. For a game with so much time investment it's quite a shock to lose all that. I worked so hard these past two weeks to try and get to the end game before league's end and it feels like a waste to me. I of course understand you can play your old characters in Standard, but I wouldn't want to - that's not where the new things are, and where the most active community would be. It also encourages powering down a huge amount of time out of the gate to get up to speed, time I don't think I have in the Fall. And to lose all forms of progression every three months is a kicker (well, aside from Masters, which I don't even have). It's almost like a timer. I don't mind playing from the start with no exp and, I understand the benefit of an economy reset, but three months is short.

They better come at this next league with guilds, and chat on consoles, so it's more social and fun in those ways, otherwise I don't know.
The three months cycle is the best in term of cost-efficiency and player retention. There's a talk by Chris Wilson detailing how they reached this conclusion. After 1.5-2 months a significant part of the playerbase have reached their objective and would take a break or slow down. Rinse and repeat get boring after a while. For example, Steam holds a sizable portion of the players and you can clearly see the steady decline until the 10-20k of core players that are there no matter what (link). So, as a business it makes little sense to prolong this low-income period much further. The game mostly lives on the hype of pre and early league anyway.

They promised the console chat for "soon", so it should come... soon? They commented on this in a QA, you can look it up if you want.

Yeah, but progression is pointless this way. It's more for how far you can get and what you can do in a few months, which I understand the appeal of, but at the same time, for someone like me who likes to grind and work hard to get something, it just feels like you lose it so why invest the time. I'll have to revisit how I think about all of it. Thanks for the info! Chat and guild systems would make the game social and that would change it hugely for me.

Hey AeraLure, thanks for your feedback on League migrations! We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and I'll pass them on now.

Although Zphyr's covered pretty much everything, Abdiel_Kavash has written up a pretty comprehensive guide on League migrations here, as well. :)
Thanks! It wasn't what I was expecting. It's like endless play instead of towards a goal you can keep. Wasn't what I thought I was getting into lol but I do love the game. I will play the next league and see how far into it I can get.
