No customization..At all?
As much as I'm loving this game as it stands now
I do not like the forced gender concept at all. I loved Diablo 1 and 2 and played them both far too much. THis game, while it is honest to what made D1 and D2 good doesn't have to be exactly the same in all regards. I see no sense in that. Forcing gender on a class is so 1990's. Speaking solely for myself. I pretty much avoid any game these days that forces a gender on the character class I chose to play. IMO it is narrow minded development. If they simply are waiting for cash to roll in to hire art to do it right later, fine. If they insist on being so true to D1 and D2 way of things to force this sort of aspect, foolish. I'm making a exception for this game. I'm enjoying it. Usually I'd just say no. | |
" I'm young, yes. But I'd like to think that games have progressed since the old games like Diablo with simple additions that are a must for an MMO. |

A day will certainly come where one will be able to don the clothing of their choice and begin their adventure anew, under the guises of 'Melroy the Magus', or 'Gra'dok Firebicep' or 'Skullcrusher Bonelord of the Lands of Heavy Metal'.

" Just wanted to note that the game is not available to buy - it is F2P. And yes, I realise we can buy shop credits and get beta access as a bonus etc etc, but if you wanted to wait it would be free - no need to buy. |

Each of the characters GGG has designed has a particular backstory and purpose within the game world, even if it's not super apparent now. You are roleplaying the experiences of a particular exile, with a particular story.
There are two types of roleplaying games really... in one you create a character and choose its model and you act it out as you would... in the other type you jump into the skin of a predefined character and you act out their experiences and their story. This game is the second kind, albeit you will be able to customize your look through the shop! If you have account problems please Email Support

" That's always the tough choice for us roleplayers. Are we creating a character of our own (this tends to be the way I think in games like this) or are we merely creating a 'facsimile' of an archetype with a distinct background and possibly even future? Usually I compromise and imagine each character as playing out these carved roles, perhaps acting differently within the envelope of the pre-existing narrative path. Not that I plan to actively roleplay with others in Path of Exile. Sorry, but that's just a bit silly to me -- there are other environments much more conducive to a freeform sort of roleplay if that were my wish. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

That's really my position on it. This isn't really a medium within which I would truly roleplay a personal character of mine, therefore I have no qualms roleplaying a predefined character with a predefined story.
I feel that in some other games, this isn't necessarily the case and they are much more conducive to creating your own. Both sides have merit, and GGG ultimately decided on this way for better or worse. I actually look forward to seeing these stories and perhaps seeing cut-scenes showing me more about them. I think overall if the game focuses on gameplay and content, then story-driven pregenerated characters are best. If it's based on social interaction and personal choices then I feel that building a personalized character is very important.
