I think visual can always come later. Just hopefully developers don't lose sight of this suggestion. But yeah variable zoom is needed for sure to actually look at your character, when they do add these visual changes.

I understand that alternate genders are (1) expensive to implement - in man-hours, and therefore in money - and (2) something they're hoping (due to player sentiments like yours) to implement as a microtransaction feature later on.

I'd definetally buy the game right now if it had a gender option ^^ I'm really weird in the sense that I want to have an option to change my characters gender and appearance xP hate being forced to look a certain way.

Diablo 2 is an ooolld, old game and was mostly single player(I think)
