Overpriced items are not a 'scam', they are a 'rip-off'.

Idk but im afraid GGG will have to choose from the smallest evils to improve market in POE if the items stats were fixed than there were some auction models that could work but with this random generation of stats I can't image how it will work

A fair stance, but not really relevant to the topic at hand. :)

Well, if I'm to contribute something relevant, then I'll say that people use both words entirely too liberally.

In a certain MMO there was a material that was used to refine/reinforce/upgrade weapons, and it could drop at any level. I used to go around buying it for 80-90% of market value from newbies, and then I'd sell it later for full market value, or just hold on to it for a while. My reasoning was that those newbies would just blow it on upgrading some useless low level weapon anyway, so it's better off in my hands, and the money is better off in their hands. If they ever asked me what the true value was, I told them the truth.

Nevertheless, people called me a scammer for this. I didn't try to correct their word usage (it's not like I engaged in a bait-and-switch), nor did I stop doing it. It did make me feel bad though. A little bit.

But in every environment, people are going to try to get the most for themselves with the least spent. That's to be expected. Hence, negotiation. No need to call someone's price a rip-off; just make them a counter offer instead.

People will always try to work things to their advantage. Some using more ethical means, others using blatantly unethical means. But the definition of what is ethical and what isn't will vary from person to person. To some people, buying something for 90% of market value and reselling it for a slightly higher price is unethical and doing it makes me a bad person. I disagree, but I won't begrudge them the ability to have their own system of ethics.

People just need to be vigilant, so they don't get taken in by either a "scam" or a "rip-off".

But for me, that's MMORPG stuff. In ARPGs I avoid things that don't involve puddles of gore.

Again, very fair stance and I'm glad you can contribute. It's precisely because of how you felt when people called your industrious trading 'scamming' that I wanted to make this thread.

People should not feel like they're doing THE WRONG THING by asking prices higher than others. That's what business is about, isn't it? maximise profits? Of course, there are lines and each business has to decide which it can cross to stay 'in' business.

And while I agree that this behaviour is 'better' on a true MMO, it's going to happen in any game with trading. And I think GGG love the idea of player trading, else they'd have made everything account-bound.

And although I don't trade myself, that'd be super boring. Also, it'd make gifting shit to friends sort of difficult. :)
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
Guilty of using the word "scam" to liberally.

The only way for someone to truly weight the value of an item in this game is based on information given. As an example "max rolls on mods" "ilvl (which I am glad is displayed)" and need.

Do not pay more than you want to plain and simple. Make informed and knowledgeable trades.

Sorry Charan for going slightly off-topic.

The difference is significant and important.

No they are not. They are just the opposite sides of the same coin.

If someone gains your confidence and then tries to actually steal from you or gain money/goods from you for any purpose other than agreed upon, it is a scam. It is fraud.

It doesn't have to be for purposes other than agreed upon. The only difference between scamming and rip-off is the knowledge difference between the two parties. It is a scam as long as one of the people does not know the actual value of the transaction. This is where the fraudulent part of the scam comes in to play.

i.e.

Players shouting for over priced currency conversions are running a scam, since most players that know it is over priced would not enter into those type of transactions.

yep thats what i do when I trade in these games. I am like that one guy though I prefer to kill things for loot instead of trading for it most of the time. I don't give a shit what the going price is if it aint worth it to me its not going to be a deal but if I want something bad enough I may overpay willingly. That piece of gear only worth 1 exalt? Well I happen to need it to finish my gear set. Oh your busy? I'll give you an extra exalt to make the deal now or I'll find someone else ;)
