Overpriced items are not a 'scam', they are a 'rip-off'.
Considering the original terminology of words you are right but keep in mind that a rip off might include scamming methods.
Example: Scammer 1: Offer X need Y Scammer 2: Offer Y Need Z Orbs X will never be sold. Also that exchange site was clearly a Real Money scam site: Big 3 gems: GCP, Exalt, Divine Lowers value of GCP to buy them off. Raises value to sell GCP and sell gained Currency for cash. There are several ways to make a scam to look like a rip off. Other ways of scamming are: Offer X need Y C/O "Fake offer" Or the typical ebay pushing scam: Auction start: 1 Orb Offer Pushoffer Offer Pushoffer Pushoffer Offer etc. One word hasn't been used yet is foul play which is neither a scam nor a ripoff because the buyer is the foul player. Foul play usually includes using 3rd party orbs to buy an item for sure, meaning borrowing currency, crosstrades on different games or more likely buy currency for virtual currency. |

I agree that fake c/o is definitely scamming, now that you raise that issue. But you should understand that it's virtually impossible to police. When I saw people doing it, I realised my resolution to never trade with strangers and to wait to see what *real* trading options GGG has planned was a wise one.
Foul play is a good term, but sort of broad. It unfortunately invokes things like so-called 'ninja looting', etc. I thought of it but discounted it in this discussion. Rip-off is still the best term for what happens in the trade chat and on the forum. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

Auction will fix this....
Example First item on server EV/ES armor 1k 1k Sure top price 20 exalts.. Second item on server EV/ES armor 1k 1k price gose down 19 .. Third item on server EV/ES armor 1k 1k 18 exalts Now why auction ..? Because there in Auction UI people easy will see all the items on the market fast and will easy analyze whats worth and what not in comparation to other prices what, cant be done now . Because every KID feels him self like a king in their FORUM SHOPS They start biding but if you are the only one who bids and u put minimum bid and if they dont like it they just anulate all this is stupid... Add auction allready!!!! Warrning to not follow D3 story POE Will need VERY VERY GOOD BoT PROTECTION overwise in half year ALL top uniques will not cost 35 exalts but 1 how is now in D3 There are lot of game with AH and all work well except D3 but d3 was a gold pit for goold farmers. But in such game like POE with very little comunity and fans there is nothign to be afraid. |

" No. Auctions are silly. They inflate prices and drop prices of rare items because people are either rushing it or being ignorant on the seller side, and others are being penny-pinchers on the buyer side. The auction is equivalent to the congress. Everything around it erodes inward. With all intelligence, insanity becomes the backdrop of the good man, and will sooner become what usurps the good man.

" Yeah, no. Devs said no AH, they meant no AH. I told you that in another thread, and I believe it was locked. Please don't keep beating that dead horse. It doesn't deserve it. Also, I'd appreciate you not calling forum users 'kids' or using that to denigrate them. You don't know their age so don't presume it. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

How about the way Auction work in GW 2?

Yeah, the false c/o's are a huge problem for sure. But unfortunately, I don't think an auction house will solve it by a very large degree.
People will just get their rich friends to artificially boost c/o's. We see this very thing in eBay, frankly. Buttttt, I dunno. I guess no system is perfect, right? Also, sorry for making you get to the point of "venting" lol. But no worries, I know ALLLLL about vent threads. |

I sold a blessed orb for 2 GCP -- other person must have confused it for a divine orb.

" Well, if I'm to contribute something relevant, then I'll say that people use both words entirely too liberally. In a certain MMO there was a material that was used to refine/reinforce/upgrade weapons, and it could drop at any level. I used to go around buying it for 80-90% of market value from newbies, and then I'd sell it later for full market value, or just hold on to it for a while. My reasoning was that those newbies would just blow it on upgrading some useless low level weapon anyway, so it's better off in my hands, and the money is better off in their hands. If they ever asked me what the true value was, I told them the truth. Nevertheless, people called me a scammer for this. I didn't try to correct their word usage (it's not like I engaged in a bait-and-switch), nor did I stop doing it. It did make me feel bad though. A little bit. But in every environment, people are going to try to get the most for themselves with the least spent. That's to be expected. Hence, negotiation. No need to call someone's price a rip-off; just make them a counter offer instead. People will always try to work things to their advantage. Some using more ethical means, others using blatantly unethical means. But the definition of what is ethical and what isn't will vary from person to person. To some people, buying something for 90% of market value and reselling it for a slightly higher price is unethical and doing it makes me a bad person. I disagree, but I won't begrudge them the ability to have their own system of ethics. People just need to be vigilant, so they don't get taken in by either a "scam" or a "rip-off". But for me, that's MMORPG stuff. In ARPGs I avoid things that don't involve puddles of gore. Last edited by realatomicpanda#4303 on Mar 12, 2013, 1:13:10 AM
