I'd venture a guess the default population is significantly higher than hardcore, probably a number of times larger. It's very difficult to tell however, especially with the fragmentation of chat. As trendy as HC is in PoE, it's usually only a small percentage of the overall player population- you know I wonder if PoE statistics can tell us? I'm gunna check. EDIT: nope, they can only track the top 15k players in the ladder :/ Would be cool to see some official stats from the devs. Would make an interesting news post, yes? You make it sound like only in hardcore does alt f4 work, when clearly it works in default too. Also I find it amusing when people "subtly imply" that hardcore is "easy" because of "alt f4", but they don't actually do it. If it is easy why not play hardcore? I started in hc, died at 40lvl cos of desync. didn't bother continue doing new hc char but lvled this up to 50 with still no real deaths. I don't find anything different in sc or hc personally. 1. gameplay doesn't change to harder. No values are changing to harder. 2. in hc you can escape oh crap moments altF4 like in sc. 3. in hc you can you townportals at bosses like in sc. 4. you can't kill players in hc. hc in my opinion is basically like sc. if you are alive in hc it's because you are lucky and didn't get worst lag effect yet. If this is a debate on why HC is better than SC/Default League... First question you should ask yourself... "Do you enjoy bumper bowling?" - This is exactly what Softcore/Default relates to. You cannot fail. Unless you throw the ball the wrong direction (equiv of deleting your character). Not to mention the economy on hardcore is way better. The second a quality skill gem is found in Softcore, it gets upgraded to 20% and remains in the economy forever. Eventually everyone running around with 20% everything. It's like using cheat codes pretty much. As people die, gear/gems/stuff gets removed from the game forever and keeps the economy fresh and valuable!
