So I guess I got super lucky by buying a spot for 15c at the start of the league?

That map lags like mad, be prepared for a possible DC. 2/6 people in the party lagged out when I did that run.

isnt it better to not complete the atlas so you dont contest your preferred map drops (shaped maps) and actually unlock only single maps of a particular tier (again, mostly shaped maps)?

this way you would have atlas completed around 75%, but always get the best possible maps.

I'd still complete as much from the Atlas as possible to get the maximum amount of bonus chance (it really helps) . I'm currently sitting at 126/126 and around 50% of the map drops are 1 tier higher from where they drop (all a matter of RNG of course) .
Basically higher Atlas completion simply helps on sustaining higher-tier maps which in return saves you currency so in the long run you'll benefit from it.
