Can we get a /players 6 command?

200.000 players?

200.000 players?!

Do you think this game will have 200.000 players?

In NA? In Europe?

200.000 players at release?

200.000 players for the Open Beta?

200.000 accounts registered total?

Do you think the current game can attract 200.000 players and if you think the game will improve to attract 200.000 players, what kind of changes do you expect GGG to implement from now until Open Beta, or from now until Release?

200.000 players at any point in 2012?

Im so impressed at your evaluation skills. Could you please tell me how many players do you think Diablo 3 will have?
"It feels like holding my breath under water constantly." Me about the limited "life expectancy" of the inventory space on Path of Exile and frequent needs to go to town to unload.

If you look at sales of games in this genre, the lifetime sales are approximately:
4 mio. Diablo 2
2,5 mio. Diablo 1
1 mio. Torchlight

An estimate for Diablo 3 would realistically be more than 4 millions within a year. Given that is what Skyrim sold in less than a week it is unlikely to be that much lower.
Less people will play it consistently...

I think the 200.000 was taken from an estimate of accounts registered on this site several month ago.
Given that a lot more people have signed up since then I do not think it is as bad an estimate as you think.

200.000 will result in only a fraction constantly playing but instead of trying to redicule someone for giving some kind of estimate you should be able to discuss your point or give a "better" estimate.
I appear to be living in "Romance Standard Time". That has to be good! :)

200k, like I said, - players (so: accounts) - worldwide and - some time (a month or 2?) after release (like its ongoing is nowm this may be later than 2012, though.

This is not taken from any external data, this is only my (cautious - my first thought was more like ~500k) guess from my expectations on a cost-free game like POE in the given (arpg-) game 'market' situation.

Sure, I may be wrong, but the data from Torchlight (that I dont know exactly before) seem to prove I also could be right.

The "only" changes I really include in my prognosis, is the completion of the given/announced content (mainly, the missing class and acts, and the replacement of all things actually named as 'placeholders' - and a finish for the announced skillgems (there's a statement in the beta manifest, announcing around 100 different skills (more then double as now!)

One of the main balance focuses of 0.9.7 is the difficulty of the game. Once we've got 0.9.6 out of the door, we will talk about what we have planned to make sure that the game is accessible to new players and also challenging for veterans. I take this issue very seriously and will make sure that it's done right.

Good to hear.

I assume you plan to scale the party difficulty too high for a single player clearing with leechers to remain an efficient method of increasing quantity.

The hypothetical situation is a permanent league that offers a harder experience, but has less than 15% of the player base.

And then people trying to justify that it solves the difficulty problem. "Hey, want more difficulty, play that league" (that only a fraction of the player base cares about, while the main league with 70% of the player base remains with the broken difficulty)

IT DOES SPLIT THE COMMUNITY. IT DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Definately NOT A GOOD ADDITION.
If you try argumenting this way you should ask for getting rid of hc too...guess what, it's already splitting the community ;)

and hooray @chris :)

If a new league is popular and people play it, obviously it was a good addition.

I did not say that nothing should be done with normal mode. All I said is that some people want to increase the difficulty by "not being allowed to die" and some want to increase the difficulty by increasing the risk of dying.

Angry much?
Maybe something like Veteran League which is unlocked only for players with 40+ lvl char in any normal leauges?

You know folks in terms of difficulty there was one major 'thing' besides players X (or soloing in multippl games on cbn) in D2 that allowed players to adjust difficulty of the game.
If you played D2 you probably know about this (maybe not about the mechanic behind that).

PoE lacks/forbids/discourages that.

What it is? :>
