I'm a couple of generations removed from this, but I just don't get the idea of watching someone play a video game. I just don't get it. But you have to realize that even someone who is being paid to play a game will eventually tire of it.
I'm a couple of generations removed, also. But it's not too hard to draw a parallel between Twitch and all other forms of audience-oriented entertainment we've been consuming for the past couple of thousand years.
The idea is the same as watching someone do anything else for entertainment. Like play a sport, or act. It's pretty well established that most people like watching other people do stuff.

Yeah I like watching others play thing I am likely to never play myself but if I would rather play then watch others if I have the choice.

Playing the lab is incredible boring, I couldn't imagine watching someone play the lab. That is probably one of the reasons they all left.

Because the game hasn't really evolved much over the years, these long time streamers are probably just becoming more burnt out of the game. I've been playing since it released and I'm feeling burnt out myself. I play pretty casually compared to some of these streamers.
Because the real PoE whiteknights and elite pros will never ever allow this fucking game to evolve.
They shut down any possibility of this game ever getting better before GGG dare making an attempt as such. Then they pull craps like "I will never give GGG another penny because this game has changed".
Very sad day. But then again the real PoE elite pros will never allow this game to change or evolve... they talk trash act big, then just give in and quit the game. Just look at all these "best streamers".
One good example is Havoc whining about how PoE is 2 easy that he can hit Lv100 in 4 days while watching porn. Then GGG nerfs the exp for the elite pros like him, and then he says this exp gain is 2hard and quits...
Havoc wasn't complaining because it was easy to hit 100 in four days, he was stating the content of the game was too easy. Making the game grindy by nerfing xp doesn't increase the overall skill level it takes to play this game.
And GGG has changed the game over the course of the past few updates. So you are just wrong.

Hopefully people start understanding this.
GGG still hasn't answered how they obtained data on "players enjoying a harder grind" or what "harder grind" even means.
I didn't give any fucks about length of time to get 100, I was more upset that Red Maps got wrecked with the XP Penalty so basically nothing changed from 2.2.

Did you play football in high school? Did you watch the NFL too? Same thing.
My father was very good at high school football, maybe You have heard of him, Polk High, 4 touchdowns in one game, anyone?
