Death Penalties

I am not sure but right now the Death Penalty from this Game is like this:
Oh i died, pfft what ever!
and that on Merciless!

I played a Game where Death is very unforgiving like losing all of your Equipment including Money and Exp plus you got a Death Penalty too, like half HP for a given Duration.
Ohhh i think that was D2!
but that was not Really Good...

But maybe this Game needs something new, something really Challenging and never seen before in any other Game, something like if you Die, you have the Choice to Fight in Hell for your lost Exp, also like this example:

You died and have lost 15% of your Exp, for a "your Level" Character you must Kill "To-Kill List" in Hell, now you have the Choice!

Lets Fight those Mobs in Hell!
You get Spawned in a Hell Town there you could Buy or Sell some Stuff and you get your "to-kill List" and a Red Portal to a Random Hell Like Dungeon (Imagine the Creepiest of the Creepy a really Bloody Hell of a Nightmare xD).
There you must Fight the Mobs on your "to-kill List" you must Fight all those Mobs on the List and then you get your 15% Exp Back something like:

To-kill List
Normal Mobs: 50
Magic Mobs: 20
Rare Mobs: 15
Elite Mobs: 5

Those Numbers will increase as your Level Rises(maybe 10% each lvl?), and it should be Handled like a Quest (The Hell Quest) if you have killed your Mobs, a Portal to Normal Town will open.

Rules of The Hell System
-The Hell should´t be too Hard, but Challenging!
-The Hell should be a Quicker way to get your 15% Exp back, but whit a Risk you could lose 30% if you Die in there! (Yea! That would be unforgiving 45% then!)
-If you log out while in Hell (or dc´d) you Spawn in Hell Town!
-The Mobs are all at your Level!
-You can use Portals in Hell but you only get to Hell Town! (They should look Red).

Party

-If you die in Party your Teammate´s get a Choice to Help you there (Those will lose 15% too (Cause they Die!) and after Beating the Hell you and your Team get the exp back).
-Its Saver if you are in a Party cause if you Die (in Hell)! you wont lose 30% exp but you will spawn in Hell Town and you get a Curse for 1H if you die again you lose 30% (remains until done, also after Hell too!).
-You can only make a Hell Party while in Hell Town (if you whisper a Living Player he will see something like"Takahiro´s Wisper from Hell"), then he know that i am in Hell right now xD and if some living Player will wisper you to Hell i see something like"Dude´s wisper from the Living"

Items and exp

-You dont get any Items there (or low chance of Obtaining Hell Items?).
-Hell Items Could be New Currency? (Can be discussed?)
-You can´t use The Hell to Train! (also you only get your 15% exp back after defeating all of those Mobs).

Lets Retreat and lose 15% exp!
pfft, what ever!
And you wont get Nightmares of Hell xD

Damn my Ideas are Flowing!

And how is that? could it be possible to Implement something Big and New as Death Penalty?

Personally i consider the XP penalty alone to be too forgiving, altough in higher levels, >80-90 it might correctly punishing.

However, you had that in D2, with a repair bill which you can't have here, so you'd need to have another penalty, just to make sure you're on your toes.

Maybe :

XP penalty on gems aswell, or even a -1 level change on a random one.

Larger XP penalty instead of 5/10/15, maybe extreme values like 20/35/50.

Personally, it won' matter for me considering i will only play hardcore mode from open beta onwards, but it has to be punishing, otherwise it's just ignore'able.
I don't think 10% is too forgiving when you enter a area and 5 or 6 mobs with flicker strike hit you at the same time. I can generally handle majority of mobs without an issue due to the shadows guerilla warfare style fighting, but when I do die, it's noticeable. And usually when I do die, it's in an area that I'll more than likely continue to die due to the mobs skill set up.

So say I walked into the ghost ship area, and died immediately due to flicker strike. I come back, same thing happens deeper in the tunnel, and again, and again. If I died 4 times in the ghost ship, I just lost ATLEAST 40% of my exp bar, and you'll probably only walk out of there with gaining maybe 2 bars of exp.
I think maybe an effect that will limit your health and mana for an amount of time would be appropriate.
We have bled and fought, we have aided and destroyed, we have believed and mistrusted, we have lived and died, and now we must walk the path of exile.
Don't know if this has been suggested yet (don't wanna read through 114 pages), but what about a zombie version of you spawning where you died. It will be a bit slower, and slight lower stats than you. But it will have the same gear and skills as you.. And it will stay on that map until you (or a party member) kills it, that means, it wil not despawn when the map resets.

This would just act as a long respawn timer. Horrible.

XP penalties serve the purpose well. Death should be something that is avoided at all costs. I would be fine if one death reset all XP on current level.
i think there should be a buff that you get for not dying, and you lose it when you die. preferably something like magic find because it prevents people from farming an area too high level for them just for the loot, but you are also not heavily discouraged from trying risky plays.

being forced into playing hyper defensively gets rather stale quick. death should be punished, but i think it should be a different sort of punishment.

Yea i think the Same, its so boring to lose XP or something if you die, thats like in nearly all other Games-.-

I really would like the Idea to Fight my XP Back (in Hell like i said before...).

Ok that Idea whit a Zombie version of our Death Character is nice too but how to implement that?
and if implemented i really think some funny trolling Dudes would make a Character that he will let die all the Time to annoy other Player whit an Zombie Army of that Player (i would not do that...), also something like that would be in the chat.

Random Dude: Damn some Annoying Necromancer Player´s Zombie spamms me like hell whit some exploding Skeletons-.-
Other Dude: Yea i think his name is Takahiro damn it, there are so many of him...
someone: If we kill one another Rises again damn its so pointless...
and so on...

And that whit someone who don´t die on purpose-.-

I dont know if this idea already excist but this is what i think will be better then the % lose exp:

If you die you dont lose exp, but your exp gain will stop for the amount of 10% of your lvl exp. This negative buff stays even if you log out and log in another time. So you must play active till you have gathered this 10% without getting it.

The penalty is the same as its now, but you dont lose what you already earned. Still you have to work for it.

Another idea which is even better i think is slowing your exp for lets say 30% the next 2 bars regardless if you become lvl higher. This buff expires when the 2 bars complete without dieing or when you die again it will max out to 2 bars again. It can not stack btw couse its bad enough i think.

Another thing that can be cool is finding a special orb something with the name " ididntdiedidi' wich can be sold to lift the curse. I think ppl hope to find these and use them esp when you are high lvl.

as u may think i havent read the whole thread but i just had an idea...

how about that despite the exp loss/ decreased increase,

there would be a punish on your maagic find quality/quantity? that it gets reduced by 50% of your total maybe? so evryone gets the same punish or it can be specific to lvl!... so when u make a bossrun, he is less likely to drop alot and awesome items.

it may be a spinn off from others ideas...

anyway, i think you will make it great guys!
