I found it more effective to just ignore the prophecy system completely, trade silver coins for chaos and buy the prophecies you need to complete. Economy!

It takes some srs skills to maintain zero challenge while trying the league.
The real hardcore PoE players and the elites sit in town and zoning in and out of their hideouts trading items. Noobs that don't know how to play PoE correctly, kill monsters for items. It's pure fact, it will never change.

My take on prophecies is that those prophecies that reward you (give you uniques, upgrade uniques or have impact on maps) must be balanced with fillers to limit rate at which you acquire benefits. There are some great rewards in prophecies but at times it looks like it is only the filler you get. I now have close to 50 coins on my character at any given time, which I obtained on the way to get to lvl81 on single character.

Side benefit or intention might be to force players to revisit areas that are not usually populated by characters in end-game.

I really like Prophecy patch--returning after long break in mid-Warbands updated--and only encountered few issues with prophecies:
1. Ambitious Bandit I was a real pain to get
2. Mysterious gift prophecy is annoyingly frequent and often warrants sealing it and throwing it away
3. Certain prophecies that require killing rare mobs work randomly--Flame sentinel in Solaris took 5 kills to get the drop, first 4 kills did nothing and last one finally got me the drop

I_NO lost her mind long ago when all of her family got rekt by a meteor.
Balance is an illusion, exile.
I'd go nuts if I repeated any single thing for twelve hours. Prophecies are a nice addition to maps and lab but nut a replacement by any means.
