I don't necessarily have a solid grasp on the odds. What I've heard often repeated is that the average for manual fusings is 1200. I've also heard of some people using 6000 fusings and no 6L. If both of these facts are true, whether it's "a good idea" or not depends on your personal preferences. If you are a cold, logical, rational being as the study of economics assumes we all are, then you should always manually 6L.

However, if the tiniest chance of having to spend 3k+ fuse is very demoralizing/frightening to you, it is probably not a good idea to try manual fusing, just in case you're that 1 in 10,000 or 1 in 100,000 or 1 in 1,000, whatever it is, that has to spend a lot more fusing than expected.
