A relaxing and rewarding experience

I don't believe that you made it through Act IV normal and found cruel to be more difficult.

That's impossible.

A more relaxing experience might be to just reroll when a character get's to that point op. Rerolling rather than trying to force a flawed character into progressing is also a less stressful way to learn about the game. The more you learn the easier it will become to push your characters into higher content.
