How important is the guardian? I hate the idea of possibly losing stuff and having to rebuy again.

My guardian is super tanky, he has around 35k life plus dodge spells from atziri steps. You sometimes lose a spectre, in a super hard fight might lose a zombie, but the Guardian NEVER dies. So dont worry about losing him if you have him level 20 for example and 20/20 or similar minion life. In the other hand, he is not so expensive, leer cast is 1c, dying breath 1c also, atziri step is 1c(cuz everyone is doing atziri and u can buy worst roll), i got a deaths oath for 3c (its standar ofc, but this armor nobody uses) and the gloves are around 1c too, so the total cost of guardian is around 7-10c.
And its quite important, he gives u and all ur minions(cuz of leer cast) 15% aura damage + 18% aura damage (cuz of dying breath ) plus some increased curse effect (dying breath too). If you using deaths oath, he also has the chaos aura and a super cool bloody foot effect !!.
If you guardian is going to die, you can remove the gem from the helmet, unsummoning him from danger.

PD: My guardian never died so far. I had run maps 81 and a lot of 77 78 and 79s. I dont even think he was remotely close to die.

What is the point of Hatred? Since we have low dmg, they aren't going to benefit from it. Is it for the cold slow?

Hatred is for SRS, the damage they get from it is calculated from their damage, not our damage. Its super insane the damage that the srs + zombies get from hatred. Wrath is for spectres mostly.
