He just understood, that when people strive for something, more times than not you are already planning on the next step as you finish the one you are at.
Except the correct analogy would be if your father said "Oh good job on college degree BUT the REAL accomplishment is university"
Which makes no worthwhile difference, assuming you aren't looking for a "fight" of course.
