Interesting note about RMT (real money trading)...

Chris posted this thread in the Beta Default Trading forum: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/98928

You know what's funny about that? Chris was one of the biggest sellers of Diablo 2 items. Much of the initial funding for the game was from this. Kinda funny/ironic.

I'm happy it happened because the game turned out great but there's a lot of hypocrisy there.

It's actually 100% true, been confirmed several times.

That's a lie, Chris funded the game by cooking and selling crystal meth. Confirmed on stream.
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.
Got links that can back it up(not saying it isn't possible)?

it could be hypocrisy if you look at it together, only you are not considering two basic things which drive the human thought, commonly referred to as time and place.

two objects can be at the same place only if at different times, and two objects can be at the same time but in different places. but he both did it at a different place and a different time.

it could be hypocrisy had he been selling items while not allowing you to sell, but then again, it is his game, and some games make money this way. but it is not even that, since he does not sell items at all.

had he been selling items but not allowing you to sell them, you could also call it a monopoly, but it wouldn't be the case because you are not forced to live in this one world where he controls everything. it is a game, and you are either playing by the games rules or you are a criminal in the game world. but you are free to leave this world in favor of another, and even create your own worlds, much like he did, so it is not even close to that term - monopoly. but again, this term should not even be investigated as, as I've said before, he is not selling items himself.

feel free to create your own game and sell items in it, and allow everybody to sell items in it, and do whatever you want. but since the game owners do not want to make their money that way, and even give you the opportunity to play their game for free, is it hypocritical for them to stop you from making money out of it, and moreover weakening the ideal they are striving for - no items for sale?

had you lived in a country where stealing was obligatory to survive (and at the start of the 20th century there were places like that, and today as well. but let us not go into yet another topic like world history), and after living your life as a thief just to survive, you would go off to create your own village, growing your own food, where you wanted people to live differently, would you be a hypocrite? would it be hypocrisy for you to banish other thieves from your peaceful community?

sure you could say that you were not forced to steal to survive in D2 and that the analogy is false and whatnot, and we could go on to discuss the fact that any analogy is actually false since there is no one to one correspondence in any such thing, but it was not an analogy. it was a thought exercise and nothing more. an exercise to reconsider your definition of hypocrisy in light of the terms time and place. language is a funny in that way - we all think that it is common to all of us, yet each of us has his own private definitions to all of the words.

sorry to throw so much philosophy at you, starting with that of science (time and place) and ending with that of language.
the path that can be chosen is not the correct path to choose. such is the nature of the Dao.

Sorry to be THAT GUY but...

For such a smart guy you should capitalise more.

He is just saying people shouldnt talk about it in-game and in the forum.

In reality, they know people will do it anyway.

The problem is that being "ok with it" publically is bad reputation for the game.
