Is the BiS pursuit enjoyable for you?

Some of us don't play for BiS pursuit. Some of us play for the excitement that comes from getting that item to drop that you've needed for the last 15 levels to progress. Some of us do not enjoy Path of Mercantile with that annoying combat tutorial for the first 30 levels...

..and we get fucked hard.

What does SFL have to do with this thread? People interested in a SFL probably don't give a crap about best in slot gear.

First of all, as a kind of disclaimer, I am in no way saying SC is better than HC or vise-versa. Both have their pros and cons, to each their own.

That being said, I am an HC player, exclusively. I really don't know much about standard, other than the fact that I end up there when I RIP. I am not a frequent reddit user; I don't even understand how that site works. I did stumble upon the PoE subreddit, though, and something really got my attention.

Threads with stuff like "New Best dagger on the server!". The crafter charges ridiculous mirror fees (100ex) to mirror this "new best dagger".

My question to you guys is, is that one of the reasons you guys play softcore? To pursue BiS in every slot? Seems to me like there's a mirror worthy item for every slot that everyone even knows by name (I even know 'Loath Bane' now) and everybody seeks to gear up with those. Doesn't that take away from the fun of the game, like finding crazy loot and equipping it and killing shit to find upgrades?

Seems very stale and homogenous to me, and that it would trivialize the content and make the game boring. Everyone running around with the same dagger would get very boring, very fast, for me at least.

I dunno maybe it's just the top 1% that actually have this gear, but judging by the activity in the threads, it seems like quite a few people have these mirror-worthy items...

I think you might be overestimating the number of mirrored items people have or underestimating the number of people in standard. But.....I could be wrong too since I have no data to base my assumption either.

Bis is a goal, not every one shares it. Some people obsess over it which is fine. Some people obsess over it and think they are entitled to it - to me, that is not fine.

Make it easy and you'll have a lot of finished characters. What then?
Thanks for all the fish!
Mostly reiterating what others have said, BiS is no goal at all, just too game breaking IMO but then if you can afford it and it helps you get to lvl100, if that is a goal then why not on some level. It is not game destroying as some are suggesting as well because poe has such build flexibility, you can easily find yourself working on a new interesting build in a new league, or even in standard without reverting to your best gear, if you can not then you are missing the point.

I basically quit after Dom, gave my 6l and most of my wealth away, never to return and now I find myself toying around in standard again, actually farming heavily for the first time making wealth wanting to push a character and build forward. Liquidating some old gear, a bit of trading and I could see getting to a BiS item but it is a hell of a lot more fun and satisfying trying to craft your own gg gear.

Had even been working on a pure phys corsair for current character, blew a fair bit of currency on it, alts, regals, a few exalt, got too bored, decided to throw some chaos at it (only 2) and,

Probably not GG but not common with the crit multi, might sit in my stash for 12 months but one day I might decide to do a build with it, or add it to a character that gets moved over from a finished league. Now back to rolling a gg phys corsair (they look better than foils).

Short answer. Yes, but it sucks that it has to be a mirrored copy, as it takes hundreds or even thousands of eternals to make your own... I should note I've never found an eternal in over a year of playing...

Yes, I love it. I love the cycle of getting one character all fitted out in OP gear and then having it go out and farm to fund the next character who will do the same for the next. I do it in HC at the moment because the constant threat of losing the items makes it all the more exciting.

This is bull. I think people think this because people lie about how much they spend to create their items so others never even try. Items like daggers and wands will undoubtedly take many hundreds of eternals to perfect because of the huge affix pool, but items like helms and chests can be crafted to near perfection for far less than the cost of a mirror.

My last two items were created for a total cost of under 100ex (obtained mainly from selling old crap left over in sc that became legacy here).
Spoiler

Aside from the fire res on the chest, they couldn't be better, and again, total combined cost to make them was about 100ex. That's an achievable amount of currency for people to save up if they are willing to farm and trade. For some people it might take a week, for others it could take a couple of months, but either way it is achievable if it's your goal (also ignore the gems in the helm, idk why they are there, I'm not using it at the mo >.>).

I could very well be overestimating the number of mirrored items. It was kind of a knee-jerk reaction to browsing Reddit. I rarely visit that site, but when I did, 1/4 of the topics were about this mirrored item and that mirrored item.

It just boggles my mind that some people would save months and months worth of currency with the intent of buying a BiS weapon, getting to that point and purchasing it..... what then?

Im closed beta i had a mirrioed chest. That 6 link Vall regal , it was 6 linked with 1200 ES , i can't remember it's name. I worked on that crit dagger shadow from the start of that reset . i got the chest about 3 weeks before the server whipe.

Not suprisingly to me i was happy the item was whiped .

Most would be pissed at lossing a item like that , however i have been in this situation before and was not suprised .

Having BiS items in a game like PoE makes it boring, you no longer have anything to do. And u are a god vs the content. PoE is not the only game like this in fact most games are like this.

WAAYYyyyy back when in Everquest i found a glitch witch ( being the "hardcore" gamer that i am ) i explotied the shit out of to basicaly make me the richest player in the game. I had the best home , the best gear , and i could buy whatever i wanted no matter what the sellers prise was . The game got stale and boring and i soon quit.

In EvE online i found a glitch whare A officer rat got stuck in a Glitched off grid safe spot i had made ( i don't know how it happend i tryed to recreat it 1000 times but could not ) So at server reset ( 4 AM in the moring to me ) i would wake up log on to EvE Kill the fresh spawn Officer spawn and colect my super rare and valubale loot ( even more valubale made by the fact that i had a 100 % strangale hold on the market for this officers items ) . However at this point in time i knew how dangrous this could be . Of course i cashed in for a long time on it U can never have to much curency in EvE however it made me feel like the risk was removed from combat since when i died i could replace what i lost for basicaly nothing. I used the curency i had made in outlandish pvP Risking very dangrous hot drops in pimped out ships till i was poor again. Was a good time but beging poor again was fun aswell made me reconect with the game and have fun with it all over again.

What im trying to say is that ... the grass is always greener on the other side , till u get thare then you miss the old green trail that got u thare.

It's not the destination , it's the journey

Thanks.

I personally dislike the loot game. I like more predictable progression. This also means I can just focus on playing the game and I don't have to worry too much about the hundreds of rares that litter my feet and stop to look at them hoping they might be good.

Even then, the scaling is so bad. If a physical weapon drops that doesn't have +80% increase damage it's automatically worthless. If it doesn't have decent + flat damage then it's still incredibly weak. The difference between even marginally useful rares and good ones is so wide that the yellow color means nothing.
