What Do Some "Old School" Gamers Have Against Player Trade?

I had a level 89 character in domination league. I recycle my names.

A scion may be born of the rich, and as such hold more opportunity...
but a scion will never be able to appreciate the finer beauty of those less fortunate.

Im Oldschool to a fault. I trade sometimes, I don't play it like its a market sim like some though. Different strokes.

Unrelated to the topic: GGG will swap names between two of your characters if you email them and ask. This way, you can recycle a name and still keep your old character, if you want to. I've been doing that.

The backlash against a marketplace type setup was mostly fueled by a broader backlash against how Blizzard abused the concept with RMAH. GGG reaaaaaaally wanted a barter economy but of course that didn't happen. The first thing people did was ascribe relative values to the currency orbs. Why? Because we don't have Stones of Jordan, I guess...
.

The worst thing about it is, I _would_ love to be able to actually craft.

But i can't because trivial modifications which are as likely to hurt you as help you come from orbs you find once every 6 months.

so crafting is virtually worthless for casual players, and we got currency anyway.

so why not do away with "crafting" and set-up a true currency ?

You didn't get the point of my post about crafting here, it would seem.

I'll make it much clearer: the ONLY crafting we have is vendor recipes and scraps/whetstones. The rest is just spinning wheels of fortune in the dark and hoping for a flashing light.

It's not a spoon. It's not a fork. It's most DEFINITELY not a knife. It's a fucking spade. We need to call it one already.

Here is the description of 'Currency' from the item data page:

"Path of Exile does not have a gold-based currency. Instead, you occasionally find valuable Currency Items of different rarities that allow you to modify your equipment. You can either spend these items to improve your character, trade them with other players or NPCs, or hold onto them for later use. For more information about the currency system, check out this old development diary entry."

Number of times GGG use the words 'craft' or 'crafting': zero

Check this out: Old Dev Diary about Currency Orbs -- number of times the words 'craft' or 'crafting' appears on this page: zero

The word GGG use is 'modification' or 'modifying'. Because they knew from the start there was no real crafting to this process. It's gambling. Plain and fucking simple.
If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.

Give me the option to trade, but do not ever force me to use it.

Simple, and a world of difference.
Doesn't take an "old school" gamer to figure that out.
Alva: I'm sweating like a hog in heat
Shadow: That was fun
They make a game hard to beat and players feel "forced" to cheat. Says more about players than the game.

Says a lot about the game too.

There is some truth to this. I learned to trade in D2. I also learned to hate trade in D2. The ratio of trade to fucking flaming asshole was too high for me.

But I also grew up playing games that were never online and impossible to trade. I'm comfortable with that and actually prefer it. When it comes to gaming, I don't want to be bothered playing with others. And that includes close friends that I will gladly spend hours out on my boat with.
I don't personally mind trading, it's just that i prefer not to.
Yet, it still somehow feels forced on you, which in my opinion, is not a very good design choice - if people want to trade it's all nice and great and they of course should be allowed to do so and proper tools should be provided for them, but nonetheless others who do not wish to partake in trade should still have equally viable options and we should be able to make it trough all the content on our own. Well in two words - we aren't.

Right now I am running an experiment - I made a new char (reave+dual strike shadow, crit. chance + attack speed, unimportant) and set out to beat the game with no trading involved. At first I was willing to play with only gear I had found (no crafting either). Well that didn't last long, but ok - still no trading, and I do realize it's silly to rely on purely dropped gear - the currency serves a REAL purpose after all. Anyway, like I said - an experiment. Well, currently I have made it to A1 merciless. So far so good - ripped only ~20 times to cruel Dominus, wasnt fun. Lost half a level doing it. That's what you get for not trading. It's maybe just my bad luck, but I am still running around in A1 merciless with some gear I have since A2 normal. And yes - most of the corrupt bosses by now are unbeatable by now, although i can leech my full life back in 3-5 seconds. Also, starting to run dry on decent crafting currency - wasted all my fusings and jeweler orbs and several stacks of chromes and armor scraps to make a decent 4L (not 6L, not 5L, but 4L) chest armor - nope, the RNG trolled me and with my last jeweler i ended up with the same white 1S armor i started, only several stacks of currency poorer.

Anyway - in short - don't do self-found, it's bad for you. Embrace the trade...I hate myself for saying that. But seriously - i checked it out and for about 6 chaos I can get 5 times better gear (full setup that is)than I have found so far. That is fu**** up.
