New League = New Character?

Lets say I'm in the default parent softcore league. Do all of the child leagues I can join from there require starting a new character in that league? Or will there be temporary leagues for existing characters?

I intended to go
A character exists in one league and you must create the character in that league.

So you've got your existing characters in the normal league like everyone else, and then we open up some exciting new league where there's a prize for the highest level person at the end of 48 hours (some unique item like the "Crank Tank" armour).

To play in this new league, you have to make a new character. You create a marauder in the temporary league and play hard for 48 hours. Unfortunately in this case someone else wins, and they get the unique Troll Plate. All the characters in this temporary league including yours are converted back to the normal league. You can now play with them like normal, alongside your existing characters.

By participating in the league, you still got a character you can use like normal, but you played under harder game rules (in this case there's tbe absense of higher characters to help you out).

Its pretty much the same way "Ladder Only" characters work in Diablo II currently, just more fully fleshed out and applied to all game modes including hardcore.
So besides the one end prize, would these harder leagues also involve better loot that one could transfer over at the end of the tournament?

It could be more than one prize - there could be a tiered set of prizes given to the top 10 places, or prizes given to all people that achieve some goal.

With regard to the actual quality of items dropped in the league, we'll be making an effort to keep them fair for the difficulty of the league. For example, if the monsters had triple hit points and did insane damage, then it makes sense that they'd individually drop better stuff than a normal monster. However, most of the attraction of playing leagues like Ironman is that they're hard and you're constrained for resources.

We really want to make sure that alternate leagues are not abused for building new characters, which is why we have the policy that they can only make the game harder. We don't want it to be easier overall to get better items in alternate leagues, but of course they have to be balanced so that difficult challenges are rewarded.

i was referring to player controlled manual deletion of old characters to make room for new ones ,
provided character slots are limited like they are in alot of games .

I know what you thought, but seems like you forgot about hackers, pissed-off brothers / friends one will share account, and few more issues.
